climbs through evergreens in loose soil, or exposed rock outcrops that offer any number of difficult situations. For Steamboat '95, the loop was expanded, giving riders a couple of all-new sections on the backside of the mountain. Each AHRMA section is divided into four separate lines, and which line a competitor follows depends on the type of machine and the rider's skill level. The lines used by the Modern Classic Beginner and Advanced riders at Steamboat probably weren't challenging enough, since each class ended with multiple riders scoring no points during their three trips around the 10-section course. In case of a tie, however, AHRMA rules dictate that the decision goes to the older rider. That rule had to be employed more than usual" this year, definitely helping Ken Hatch earn his Ironman title. Still, a trial that doesn't completely challenge a rider's skill often winds up testing one's powers of concentration. Brian Slark went into the third loop tied at zero points with Chris Makynen, but a mental lapse or two caused Slark to touch twice and hand the win to his rival from Minnesota. In Premier Heavyweight Master, Matt Hilgenberg lost just a point to Belvoir's four marks. Riding the toughest Jines, Modem Classic Master winner Greg Carter scored 21 to Jess Huebert's 23, both riding Montesas. WMN INT: 1. 'Wendy Mahan (Mail; 2. Heather laJ>on (CZ); 3. (Above) Gary Davis rides to victory In the Dinosaur class during dirt track racing action at Steamboat Springs. (Right) The biggest battles of the day were between Team Obsolete teammates John Cronshaw and David Roper. Here, Roper leads Cronshaw by just a few bike lengths In the 350cc GP class. MOTOCROSS Dick Mann has been turning a Steamboat pasture into a classic-style MX track for going on a decade, but this time he found some bumps and ruts he apparently had overlooked in years past. The result was a course that was slower and rougher than before, and judged among the best yet. Dust became a bit of a problem on this intensely sunny day, despite the persistent efforts of the water-truck driver. One person who fell victiin to some of those deceptive obstacles was singer Lyle Lovett. Riding a Honda Elsinore in his first AHRMA event, he crashed in practice and injured his wrist. Vintage Iron'·s Doughty says Lovett is enthusiastic about giving vintage racing a try and plans to have Vintage Iron restore a 125cc Husqvarna that he's had since before it was considered vintage. With over 40 classes squeezed into 16 motos (plus an MX sidecar demonstration), it was a full program, and close racing was the order of the. day. Typical was the Sportsman 500cc Expert race between Ontario's Rick Hudson and Oregonian Greg Blazek. The two Maico pilots went at it in both motos, with Hudson hanging on by a slim margin each time. In Over 40 Novice, the battle over second place went down to the last inch in the second moto as Tom Howes bumped his way ahead of Dave Hersperger when the two encountered a lapped rider at the checkered flag. Hersperger's 2-3 finishes were good enough for the overall win. Double winners Randy Kirschbaum, Danny Davies and Doughty generally had little difficulty, despite riding in some very competitive classes. Kirschbaum's closest moment came on the first lap of Over 30 Expert, when he dropped his bike in the ditch section but got going again without losing the lead. And while Davies finished second to Jeff Smith in the opening Over 50 Expert moto, Smith gave Davies a gift when he forgot to turn his gas on at the start of moto two and wound up 1-3 to Davies' 2-1. Smith claims it's been 22 years since he made that particular mistake. (N Steamboat Springs Vintage Steamboat Springs, Colorado Results: 5eptem1ler 13-17, 1995 DIRTTRACI< DINO: 1. Gary Davis (Tn); 2.
