AMA GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES POINTS STANDINGS (After 21 of 24 beth, Springsteen, Davis and Landes rounded out the top 10. 883 NATIONAL Though the AMA 883cc National title chase is far from over, the Bartels' Harley-Davidson-mounted Springsteen was able to gain a few points on title rival Mike Hacker with yet another wire-to-wire main-event victory at Knoxville. "I got a good start and never looked back," Springsteen said. "I didn't think I'd get that big a lead. Hacker's right behind me in the points right now, so I gotta stay ahead of him." Indeed. Coming into the round, Springsteen's advantage over Spectro /Moroney' s/ EBC / Dunlop's Hacker was a mere six points, but while the three-time Grand National Champion left the field behind right from the start, the young Virginian was mired in. a battle for second place with his Spectw / Moroney's teamma te Jason Fletcher and Roeder H-D's Jess Roeder, and was unable to give chase. With Springer well ahead of them, Hacker, Roeder and Fletcher passed and repassed each other for the entire 12 laps in the final and went three wide toward the checkered flag for a blanket finish. In a tight call, AMA officials awarded Roeder second, Hacker third and Fletcher fourth, a result that did nbt sit well with Hacker. "We've been struggling all day, but I think that I got second," Hacker said. "And the AMA's camera broken. Again. Where is that thing when we need it?" Roeder, too admitted that it was a close one. "I turned it on and tucked in, and hoped that I had enough to beat him," Roeder said. "But Mike's a tough competitor. I wouldn't have hung my head if they'd have given me third to a guy like him." As the series heads toward California for its final three rounds, Hacker finds himself 13 points behind the veteran, 204-191, and is the only rider with a clear shot at him. Springsteen has a little breathing room, but is it enough? (N Knoxville Raceway Knoxville, Iowa Results: september 23, 1995 HEAT 1 (10 laps; 12 riders, top 2 transfer): 1. Rich King (Han); 2.
