RIce No 1 I l _ BAJA CAUFORNIA, MEXICO, AUG. 13 In convinong la hion, ro-Circuit/ AXQ-backed David Barrett blasted the competition with sand en route to winning both motos in the 250 Pro class at Too Much Fun's Tecate/Telcel La Playa Grand Prix at Catamar Sand Dunes. At the track that ma.ny consider the most exciting beach racing on the west coast, racers • were treated to a lun-filled day 01 racing and M,exican hospitality. In his first ride since his spectacular secondplace finish behind Mike Healey at this year's Mammoth Mountain Motocross, Barrett looked as if he had been riding every day. Barrett grabbed the early lead while local favorite Billy McClintock sat back i11 second wondering. how Barrett could ride so last. Barrett rode the first lap as if he were in a 250 National, fiying over bumps and jumping larther than anyone else all day. McClintock knew alter the first lap that his goose was cooked and settled into his own pace. Back in third was Rich Truchinski, having gotten off the line late after his chain broke right belore the start of the race. Up Iront, Barrett was out front and riding his own race. At the finish, the winner was Barrett with a huge lead, followed by McClintock and Truchinski. In moto two, McC1intock pulled the holeshot while Barrett and JeII.Surwall lollowed. Surwall smoked the competition in the Vet class, so he decided to try his luck in the Pro class. McClintock held his 0':"l' lor the first hall 01 lap one, but Barrett was aU over his back just waiting for a hole to squeeze by. In the blink 01 an eye, Barrett found his way past McClintock and never looked back. MeOintock held his own lor a lew .laps, but SUTwall, on a borrowed ultra-trick Honda CR 250, was moving in lor the kill. Surwall dogged McClintock lor a lap belore motoring past to take second. Back in lourth, Truchinski started the moto with the leaders, but a crash put him back in the pack so he decided to put on an aerial show for the locals. Up front. Barrett didn't pull away as in the first moto, but was still able to cruise in with the moto win and the overall. Surwall took second but was not scored because he did not ride in the first mow.• In other race action, Brian Thomas took the win in the Open Novice class. Thomas roosted his CRSOO past the likes of Dwight Demontomorency and Alegandio Morales on the way to back-to-back moto wins. Results 125 OV: 1. Llno Morales (Kaw); 2.. Rich Hl'lusmenlngrr (Yam); 3. Manul!! GonuJ8 ; 3. Jim Myrick (Rtx).
