EVENTS . . Edited bySCOlt ROusseaU. When the tapes went up, Venegas, Lucero and Schwartz broke together and were running three abreast into the turns. Venegas powered , his Motul/Lucas Oil/Shoei/Rock N Javabacked Jawa to a very slight lead, but Lucero and Schwartz were both right there. Lucero tried both the high and low lines against Venegas to no avail, while Schwartz sat in third waiting in vain for a mistake from either. They finished in that order, with Northrup rounding out the field in fourth place. After one restart, the Handicap main got underway with David Taylor holding the lead for three laps before he went too high and allowed Finch, Mark Hannah, Brad Oxley and Lucero by. Oxley passed Hannah two laps later and started putting pressure on Finch, who wasn't making any mistakes and kept low and tight. In the end, Finch collected the win with Oxley second and Lucero passing Hannah on the last lap for the third spot. Tom Collier went wire to wire in the Support main, topping John DeFries and Larry Rowley. Scott Parks won the Support Bfeature. Results SCRATOi:ol. Charlie: Venegas (Jaw); 2. Steve Lucero (Gdn); 3. Wickham winds up at Starwest Motocross By David A. Procida MORENO VALLEY. CA, AUG. 26 Richard Wickham backed up a first-mofo second-place finish with one more moto win to capture yet another overall victory in the 125cc Beginner class in this, the final round of the Starwest-sponsored Shoei Helmet/Oakley Goggle Series at Starwest Supercross Park. Wickham got the jump on his competition and led the pack into the double horseshoe. Hot on Wickham's heels and looking for a way around were Kawasaki rider Brian Meirowski with Dustin Jameson and Caleb Hawkins heading the large pack of l2Scc Beginner riders. Meirowsky made a bid for the lead as the pair rounded the corner preceding the big tabletop on the back straightway. pulling alongside of Wickham and drag-racing with him up the face of the jump. Meirowski had a little more momentum which carried him about 10 feet farther Ulan Wickham, but he landed hard on the flat ground and bounced violently back up in the au. Meirowsky didn't go down but lost all forward motion, as well as several positions. Wickham powered b.,ck by and retook the lead. In the late laps, Wickham stuffed his front wheel deep in a rut and stalled, allowing Jameson to pass him for the lead. For the remaining two laps Wickham ran second while Jameson remained out front and well out of reach as he took the checkered flag. Wickham was primed and ready for the fall of the gate, but so was Jameson as the two got off the line together. The two rode side by side through the first horseshoe, but, with Jameson on the outside, Wickham motored ahead. Lappers began to playa role in the second moto as Wickham had to work to get a.round a slower rider. Jameson followed Wickham's lead, but without being slowed down he was able to close the gap between them. Wickham picked up the pace while trying to guard his lead. Wickham was never headed, and he stopped to salute the crowd after crossing the checkered flag while a dejected Jameson was denied the overall victory. Meirowsky's 4-3 earned him third overall, edging out Hawkins 3-4 finishes. However, the big winner in the 12Scc Beginner class was Justin Gutierrez. The Yamaha rider took home the Series grand prize, a brand-new Shoei Helmet. When the °individual races\ were tallied up, Gutierrez had edged out Wickham by one point.
