Orlando battles for the
win at Second Creek
DENVER, CO, AUG. 13
perfect track and weather conditions greeted the
large turnout of riders and spectators at round
eight of the Motorcycle Roadracing Association's race series at Second Creek Raceway located just east of Denver.
The Race of the Rockies is the premier class
. of the MRA and is open to expert riders, who
may choose to ride any size of motorcycle they
prefer. The start grid is filled with bikes ranging
from the little TZ-25O Yamaha to llOOcc bikes
with everything in between thrown in. Cycles of
Boulder rider Ricky Orlando riding his ZX-9 got
the start with ZX-6 rider John Weiss, Mark
Schellinger on his OW-Ol and Aaron Turner on
his Spyderco/Sportsland of Laramie TZ in a
tight pack trying to keep pace with Orlando. A
short distance back, TZ-mounted Dave Saba and
Utah rider Shane Turpin on his Phase One
Ducati battled with Ken Rogers on his ZX-9. The
thil'd lap had Orlando starting to put some distance on the field, while Weiss tried to defend
his position from Shellinger and Turner riding
his rear fender. Schellinger was the first to go
by, taking '(umer with him and dropping the
hard-riding Weiss to fourth, while Turpin was
making up real estate quickly on his Ducali after
having to start in the middle of the grid. Donnie
Hough riding his Boulder Yamaha/HO
Machine-backed T-250 was also on the move
after a bad start and was in a duel with Dave
Saba over the sixth spot. The start of lap eight
had Orlando still in the lead, but Shellinger was
now only a few bike lengths back and making a
charge to the front. Turner still held third, but
Turpin was burning up the track and had
moved by Weiss, Saba and Hough and had his
sights set on the TZ of Turner. At the start of lap
nine Shellinger had caught Orlando and powered his way by on the back straight leading to
the tight left and on to the main straight. Turpin
also had got by Turner to move into third as
Hough worked his way into fiflh. Two laps
remained and Orlando was glued to Shellinger
as the two riders were now starting to get into
lapped traffic. Diving into the tight right-hand
tum six, the leaders encountered a lapped rider
and Shellinger went to the inside while Orlando
went to the outside. Orlando got the better drive
and again was in the lead with Schellinger clawing to get by. On the last lap, Schellinger was too
hot diving into tum two and lost the front end,
going down to hand the win to Orlando. Shane
Turpin moved up to second place with a great
come-from-behind ride on his new Ducati, with
Aaron Turner winning the battle of the TZ riders .
coming home in front of Donnie Hough and
Dave Saba to complete the top five.
