"I got a bad start and I never really
got a chance to get going," said
Andrews after the race. "1 tried catching
up but it was so dusty and so dangerous
that I decided to just wait it out and try
again another day. I could hear the leaders for a while, but they were gone. My
mechanic showed me that Duane Conner was coming up on me but I had
some stuff left in me at the end. I came
too far to get fourth."
"I was trying to ride hard because I
crashed on the first lap and jammed my
wrist a little," said Conner of his fourthplace effort. "1 didn't get a good start
and that's bad on a day like this. Then I
hit a ~tump with my rear wheel and
went over the bars, so I started a couple
of minutes behind everyone."
Later in the race Conner had to deal
with the loss of no small amount of
knobbies from his back wheel, as did
fifth-place Norton.
"The rocks cut the knobs off, I
guess," said Norton, who customarily
rides a 12Scc machine but opted for the
power of a 250 as the eighth-liter bike
would have been a disadvantage in such
dusty conditions. In addition to running
out of knobs, Norton also ran out of gas
in the late going.
Enduro superstar Randy Hawkins, a
resident of South Carolina, was sixth at
the end, while 250 A-class winner Brian
Keegan put in one of the best rides of
his lif for seventh overall. Rounding
out the top 10 at Burr Oaks were Cooper, the older Keegan brother Frank, and
Vel A-class winner Tim Shepherd of the
0
Sports Cycle Racing team.
"Tllere is no competition,
