and leave him in third at the end of round one. The next rider to the line was Gerencer. The Indianan is the defending National Champion in the 800cc class, and though he has trailed Steve Dresser all season, Gerencer was confident after his third win of the season at rO.und eight. His run took only 3.989 ~ to trip the lights and set the time'tIle~~ the class would have to shoot fOt:' ; Tom Reiser had a solid ride in- round one, clocking 4.389, to leave him fourth going into the second half of the day. The next-to-Iast rider in tbe first round was points leader Steve Dresser from Arkport, New York. Dresser, focused on the top of the hill and rocketed out of the box on his Reiser Cycle Service-backed Harley-Davidson. Dresser's round-one, second-place time of 4.046 came at a price, though, as he crashed going over the top of the hill. "I just got crazy, sick air over the top:' Dresser said. ''I've never been that high on a motorcycle before. As soon as it landed it shattered the front wheel and I fell down." The machine had to be trucked back to the pits before the Pro USA Hillclimb Team could begin the repairs. Dresser borrowed teammate Randy Gabriel's front wheel for his second run, but he couldn't match Gerencer's time. At the start of round two, it quickly became apparent that the top-three times were safe as the sandy hill dried out, making it hard to get the nitro-fed horsepower to the ground. Williams rode aggressively to snatch fourth from Reiser, who also ran faster on his second run. The fastest time of round two went to Rodney Smith with a 4.168, some 0.048 seconds off his first run. Smith also flew over the top of the hill, a la Dresser, and crashed. "Today I wanted to win worse than 1 ever have in hillclimbing, and I just didn't shut off," said the determined Smith. "I was going for the win." Petty's tough luck in the first round . wou~d continue in round two when his bike had transmission problems on the line, thus ending his day with a seventhplace finish . . .Gerencer was prepared to make his second ride if someone eclipsed his time, but his time stood and he would top the class. !'I looked at my track after I rode and 1 did a zigzag at the bottom of the hill and lost some time," said Gerencer of his first run. "I figured someone would get a straighter ride. After his second ride, Soter said the hill was getting slower but I had all my stuff on, ready to go. Luckily, I didn't have to ride." 0 Quaboag Riders Motorcycle Club Monson, Massachusetts Results: August 27, 1995 540, 1. P.ul Lowe (K.w); 2. Rich Soter III (BSA); 3. David Watson (Hon); 4.
