VOICES' • letters to the ednot America.s weekly motorcycle newspaper Volume XXXII Sharon Clayton, President Michael Klinger, Publisher Editorial Paul Carruthers, Editor Kit Palmer, Associate Editor Donn Maeda, Associate Editar Scott Rousseau, AssociJJte Editor Mark Hoyer, Mal/aging Editor Keith Bush, Copy Editor Denver and Sturgis revisited I would like to make a couple points about the Denver National Half Mile. First, I would like to thank the riders for performing on a very marginal track. There were 6500 thankful Colorado enthusiasts who thoroughly appreciated the show. I have been racing in Colorado since 1967. I spent the '70s racing flat track and held the number-one plate for a couple years in the 750cc class, so I believe that I know what I am talking about. We raced all over the state, which has mostly clay type soils, on stock car tracks and many other surfaces, and I have seen excellent track preparation on all these surfaces. I read Chris Agajanian's remarks that they did the best they eould but they did not have the equipment available to them. I don't buy that statement. I believe that at 6500 fan times $24 per seat they could have rented any equipment needed. There was absolutely no excuse for the conditions at the so-called race tracle To ask the best dirt track racers in the world to race on a surface like the one that was offered is, at a minimum, degrading if not criminal. Colorado fans want to support National racing. I believe the promoters knew the fans would show up regardless of the quality of the show. The Agajanian crew short-changed both the riders and the spectators with this debacle. I want all the riders to know that we do not want Colorado to be a place where they don't want to come and race. If this is the best that the promoter has to offer, his license to promote AMA racing should be revoked immediately. I believe that the riders rode on this dangerous and non-competitive race track just to please the fans. I thank them for that, but I certainly would have supported any decision to boycott the race.
