AMA 883 NATIONAL While Scott Parker may be starting to get the best of his competition in the Grand National Championship Series, the AMA 883cc National Series is far from being decided as Team Spectro/Moroney's/Dunlop's Mike Hacker and Bartels' / American Rider's Jay Springsteen are locked in an intense struggle for class supremacy, which has been made even tighter by Springsteen's decision not to race the most recent round of the series at the Denver Half Mile. Springer may have gained peace of mind, but in light of Hacker's win at Denver, the former Grand National Champion also gave up 20 points to the second-placed Virginian. And so it was that on the return trip to Springfield, Hacker, who had finished second to Springsteen at the spring mile, was more determined than ever to dose the gap even further. The determination paid off. Hacker grabbed the lead off the start and controlled the opening lap before Springsteen pulled off one of his patented blasts around the outside in turn two to lead down the back stretch and across the stripe on the second lap. The two riders then set off on a drafting frenzy with Suburban Motors H-D's Bret Beyer and Modesto H-D's Matt Wait thrown in the mix. The four riders left the rest of the field behind until rookie expert J.R. Schnabel slammed into the hay bales in turn three on lap six, bringing out a red flag and bunching the field up once more. Schnabel was not hurt in the incident, but he did not make the restart. Springsteen took the lead on the second green light with Hacker right 01) his tail while Beyer and Wait battled over third place. Hacker then began to assert himself on the front straightaway, leading Springsteen on laps nine and 10 before slipping back to third behind Beyer and Springsteen as the three raced under the white flag. In the meantime, Wait charged back into the fray and was once again a factor. As the quartet came off turn four, it was anybody's race. But Hacker proved to make the best move as he drafted his way between Wait arid the wall to claim his second win in as many rounds as well as his first mile National victory. Wait was second, Beyer was third and Springsteen fourth. "The Spectro/Moroney's HarleyDavidson was flyin' ," an ecstatic Hacker said on the podium. "In the first half I was just hangin' in there, but on the last lap I just pinned it. I never let off, and I hoped that they wouldn't draft me. Hopefully, we can win a couple more and catch that old man Springer." During the post-race teardown, Beyer's motorcycle was found to have an illegal deck height and was disqualified, moving Springsteen into third place.
