The battle from the start was for the fourth
spot. Sinlovich held the spot but both Jon Hall
and Rees Benson were hunting him down. Hall
was the first to make a move and on the second
lap he squeezed by and put some distance on
Sinlovich. It took the entire race, but Benson was
able to drop Sinlovich back one more spot with
one lap remaining.
Up front it was still Davidow with a commanding lead, and it looked like Collins and
Alford would not be a threat. At the end, the
order remained the same, Davidow with the win
while Collins and Alford held the runner-up
positions.
In the second moto, Alford took the early
lead in an attempt to spoil Davidow's flawless
day. Alford was out front following the first lap
as Davidow and Collins were on his tail. Before
the lap was complete, Davidow blazed by to
take the lead and never looked back. Alford
hung tight for some time but was never a real
threat to Davidow. Back in the field, Hall,
Sinlovich and Benson were at it again, the three
riders swapping positions back and forth till the
end. Sinlovich led the mo from the start, but fell
back after the second lap. Hall ended up with
fourth while Benson ran into trouble with two
laps remaining.
Davidow was in cruise mode to conserve his
energy while in the lead. The·intense heat affected the riders as the pace fell drastically by the end
of the moto. At the checkered flag. Davidow took
the win and the overall while Alford held on to
second and second-place honors for the day.

After two weeks off for the San Bernardino
County Fair, Speedway USA was up and running again with a Scratch main event that re/lected a rematch for the four riders who had vied for
the California State Championship the week
before, as Steve Lucre once again faced Bobby
Schwartz, John Aden and Charlie Venegas.
The key player in the event, however, turned
out to be the starter's tape. When the tapes went
up for the first time, Venegas tried to leave a

Eric Wheelwright has returned to hiIIclimb competition this year after several years off, and he
made his presence felt in a big way during the
Indiana State Championship HiIIclimb at Cayuga.
After running in the non-championship
event on the day before, Wheelwright apparently decided he wanted a state championship on
August 13, and no one was able to stop him as
he posted a first-round c1as&-1eading run in the
250cc class. But that title slipped away from him
on the second·round rides, so he would have to
do it in the ul~petitive 500cc class, if at all.
And do it he did. posting an outstanding 3.4m.
