"We had some kind of electrical problem:' said Orr of the difficulty that sent him to the sidelines on lap 16. Morehead used the cushion for a few laps then moved to the narrow groove. "I told (Mike) Wheeler, 'I want to run up top for the first couple of laps until the moisture goes away, but you tell me when to pull down,'" said Morehead. "He stood at the pit gate and gave me the sign and that was the time to pull down. Boy, you could hardly see the groove. Everybody that was running down inside sprayed dirt all over the groove." . Carr tried to close on Morehead, but really was forced to settle for second well ahead of the Price/King dispute. "I'm glad the day's over," said Carr. "I didn't have any problems with vision, but I think the guys in the back couldn't see, so they would go into the corner and blow dust all over what little notch there was out there. I couldn't get a good rhythm going. I would make some time on Steve and then I would go off the groove. I'd catch up, then go off the groove. He's smart,·he knew if guys were gaining on him running low he'd better get down there. He didn't make any mistakes on the rubber. I.really doubt that I could have got by him even if 1 had been right on him. He was going pretty good. He was hooked up. That's the way it goes." Cpolbeth cruised home fifth alone while Kopp held an uncertain lead over Sumner for sixth. "At the start it was hard to see, but after a while it wasn't bad for me," said Coolbeth. "In the back it was." "The slower you go, the better you were doing," said Kopp after holding Sumner at bay. "There was somebody on my butt the last five laps or so. 1 just kept thinking, 'Don't screw up.''' 0 Rnd. 1 Sept. 10 Rnd. 2 Sept. 24 Rnd. 3 Oct. 8 Rnd. 4 Oct. 22 SeriesFinal~ Oct. 28 & 29 GREAT PRIZES.fRODIRAWARDS & TIllES 1WO199611 IOTORCYCLES OF CHrACE HEAT 1 (10 laps; 10 riden. top 2 transfer): 1.
