(Above right) Thanks to a Iackadalalcal flag man, Damon Bradahaw Jumped Into Manley's bike and went over the bars. (Below left) Mike KledrowskI was next to join In the action, landing on Manley's bike and crashing. (Below right) John Dowd was the tlnal victim, and ploWed Into Manley before crashing. Luckily, all tour riders escaped serious Injury. Bradshaw had been running a strong third ahead of Kiedrowski and Dowd. Manley was being lapped. 6 crossed the finish line a super-impressive fourth. The New Yorker-turnedCalifornian ran inside the top five throughout the race before zapping Craig late in the moto for fourth. "I felt excellent," said Sheak. "I was trying really hard all race long. I fell over twice and was still charging. I think I could have done even more if there was more time." Yamaha's Kevin Windham was sixth ahead of Frenchman Mickael Pichon, while David Pingree, Michael Brandes and Chad Pederson rounded out the top 10. Brandes started the moto in second, and held the position for three laps before steadily dropping back. '1 was pushing it, giving all 1 had," said Brandes, a NMA World Mini Grand Prix Champion. "I just got a little tired. I know I can go fast, 1 just have to work on my conditioning." Pichon led Huffman, Buddy Antunez, Lamson, Chad Pederson and Hughes through the first tum in the second go-around and led for two laps before Huffman raced past in the top portion of the course. Lamson followed on the next lap and set his sights on Huffman, while Pichon bobbled on the Suzuki Staircase and nearly crashed. Hughes worked past his French teammate in the incident, and with that, third and fourth places were set. "I was getling tired," said Pichon. '1 twisted' my ankle in the second moto at Washougal and 1 did not train since. 1 am happy to have my first National holeshot, and I am happy to have a chance at fifth in the standings." Huffman proceeded to lead until the halfway point. Lamson took over with an inside line on the rough downhill section. "I was planning on passing him there," said Lamson. "I was biding my time, wailing for an opening. He was taking the outside, so I just went inside him." Once in front, Lamson pulled out an initial lead, but Huffman soon reeled him back in. "I think 1 lost my pace when I was leading," said Huffman. "After Lamson got by me, 1 latched on to his rear fender." Though he was unable to make the pass, Huffman dogged Lamson to the checkered flag. ''I'm happy with the way 1 rode," he said. "Lamson was on the gas, and I was right on him." Hughes was a distant third, well ahead of Pichon, who was in tum comfortablyahead of Honda of Troy's Mike Brown. The fourth title contender entering the race, Brown saw his title hopes dashed by a pair of crashes in the first moto. After hitting his chest in one of the spills, Brown pulled off and decided to wait for moto two. Fifth was all he could muster. "I know that I'm a super long shot for the title now," said Brown. "I guess they would all have to DNF both motos and I would have to win. I just had some bad luck today in the first moto, and a bad start in the second moto. I'll just have to win both motos next week to make a statement." Sheak was sixth ahead of scrappy Honda rider Brian Deegan, Suzuki support riders Denny Stephenson and Barry Carsten, and Antunez.
