Nevada Rally victory to Cam bell A merican Honda's Johnny Campbell (right) became the first American rider to win the Nevada Rally, topping the six-day, 2200-mile event on August 19, in Mesquite, Nevada. The 24year-old from San Juan Capistrano, California, had finished a close second last year to Frenchman Alain Olivier, the winner of the first two rallies. Because of a leg injury, Olivier wasn't able to participate this year, though he was on hand to spectate. Campbell was at no shortage for formidable competition, howev.er, with his Italian-born teammate Davide Trolli comprising the biggest threat. The two worked together to construct a substantial lead on French off-road hero Stephane Peterhansel over the first part of the competition, then fought it out between themselves over the' final two days. The final time separation between the duo was eight minutes, 48 seconds, though they had been even closer through most of the race; a final-day crash broke Trolli's roadbook holder and accounted for the larger gap. Small-bore four-strokes turned in their best performances yet in the rally, with Cycle World off-road editor Jimmy Lewis taking an American Honda-backed XR400 to the 400cc Four-Stroke division win. Fifth went to Frenchman Richard Sainct, mounted on another XR400, and 17-year-old Nevada resident Nick Pearson followed on a KTM 400 LC4. Seventh overall went to French KTM rider Eric Bernard, and American Honda Team Manager Bruce Ogilvie rode the ecologically sound EXP-2 two-stroke rally bike to eighth. Team Mammoth Mountain riders Tony Megla and Bill Postel completed the top 10 on their Honda XR600s. American Honda dominated the class results; XR628 rider Trolli won the Open Four-Stroke division (overall winner Campbell was removed from the class results), Ogilvie topped the Open Two-Stroke category, Megla was victorious in the 30+ division, Postel took the 40+ class and XR400-mounted Lori Conway won the Women's division. Kawasakis won two classes, with Tim Morton topping the 250cc Two-Stroke ranks and 67-year-old Sam Bass winning the 50+ class. In the team competition, the American Honda entry of Campbell, Trolli and Lewis was victorious. In an effort to e.ducate current and potential participants, Yamaha and WERA have issued a few specific rule reminders for the 1995 FZR600 Novice Challenge Series. "The frame and engine of machines in this spec class must be FZR600 model equipment. No hybrid frame and engine combinations are allowed; The correct Yamaha logo must be displayed on the tank and windscreen; riders must file a 1995 contingency-registration form to be eligible; all model FZR600s will be eligible; th~ FZR600 Challenge is a Novice-only series. Riders who have formerly been ranked as an Expert with any orga",ization will not be allowed to compete." In addition, since the Yamaha FZR600 Novice Challenge category is governed by WERA's Superbike rules, components beyond engine and frame may be changed and the engine may be modified.
