Cadalora and Yamaha
kee streak alive
T
he Honda riders don't like it much and neither
do the Suzuki boys, But it suits the Yamaha
team just fine and, for the fourth year in a row,
a Yamaha took pole position at the end of qualifying
for the Czech Republic Grand Prix. Plus, for the fust
time this year, there were two Yamahas on the front
row.
Luca Cadalora (right), the embattled Italian
whose results always seem to improve as the season
nears its end and contracts are up for renewal, took
his first pole position of 1995 by shattering Wayne
Rainey's lap record in the final minutes of the second timed qualifying session on the 3,35-D'Iile Bmo
circuit That he did it using a new generation of the
Dunlop tires which he'd shunned for most of the
season made it that much more interesting, More
than most tracks, the i3-turn Czech circuit is hard on
the front end, with a number of hard-braking downhill turns, and the new Dunlops were clearly up to
the task.
In the final 10 minutes of the second one-hour
session, the 31-year-old from Modena leaped to the
top of the leaderboard, clicking off a succession of
record laps that firmly established his superiority.
His best, a 2:02.180 (98.76 mph), was more than a
second better than Rainey's record lap of 2:03,266
from 1993.
Cadalora attributed his success to the new Dunlop, a front tire that was developed
in tests in both Malaysia and Mugello, and further improved for Bmo, '1t gives me the
kind of feeling to lean the bike like I did last year," he said after claiming his first pole
position in 10 months. Confirming the importance of the front end over the back end,
Cadalora said, "This track is not the right one to make a big slide. I did one yesterday
and I crashed. We try not to slide so much." He also said that he did more than 20 laps
on the tire which made him CDllfident it would last the entire 22-lap race,
'1 think we have a good chance of fighting for the first two places with these two
guys," Cadalora said confidently during a news conference for the front row riders.
With less than five ~tes left in the session, all eyes were on Repsol Honda's
World Champion Mick Doohan. He'd been fastest most of the session and had been on
the pole eight times this year. He went out in the final session with a window of about
two laps, at most, but came up 0,3(4 seconds short of Cada1ora.
He was clearly perturbed in the news conference, taking exception to the questions
put to him by the moderator, then adding that he expected the same sort of strident
com~tion that has been tile hallmark of the season. Though that clearly isn't the case,
he disagreed vehemently that it was and said he expected both Cadalora and Daryl
Beattie to be in the hunt
