brake useless. It took Chiodj a couple of laps to bum the plastic out of the pads and the tension grew. He was visibly closing on Puzar and the champion-tobe could not afford a single lapse. Lap by lap the gap got smaller, but time ran out for Chiodi. The deficit at the flag was five seconds, but it had been less until the chaser rolled back the throttle leaving the final turn as he saw his rival cross the line with both fists clenched above him. There was just time for the jubilant Puzar, clad in the Italian tricolor, to take a victory parade along the main straight while a heartbroken and pain-wracked Chiodi staggered back to his truck in tears before the heavens opened and a flash of lightning wiped out the track generator.
