J.,....' either. This morning I just said, 'screw it, I'm just gonna ride it.' I'm learning. I came in here thinking that I had to win races. I've got to win and I plan on it. The season isn't over. 1 feel bette.r every day, physically, and I've got two weeks to train. I felt the heat, but everyone else was in the same heat, so I don't think it hurt." Smith rode to a lonely fifth place. Ditto for Merkel, all alone after passing Batey on the 13th lap. Behind them, though, the battle for seventh went the distance. Batey held it for most of the race, but Chandler finally moved around Crevier and was able to attack Batey right at the flag. "That was enjoyable," Chandler said. "I would have liked to have gotten one more. It took me too long to get Crevier, but this was the first race we've done where it stayed consistent the whole race - that's a good feeling. It was the same at the end as it was in the beginning. 1 think 1 would have stayed with tna t front group if I'd gotten up with them. That's my best race of the year. 1 knew he (Batey) was the next guy. He looked like he was physically exhausted." Crevier was disappointed after having shown so much promise in earning the first AMA superbike pole position of his career. "The start was pretty bad," the Canadian said. "I was ready; 1 just didn't get a good start. 1 chose a harder tire and it was a bad choice. It just never carne in and it slid a lot. (Doug) Chandler rode really good - 1 was holding him up." . Quarterley barely managed to finish the race after running strongly early on; the Team Mirage Ducati went on one cylinder and the New Englander had to cruise around in order to finish an eventual 21st, two laps behind the leaders. "It went to just 0!1e cylinder - if that," Quarterley said. "I rolled on the throttle out of turn two and it just went BRRRP on one cylinder and it wasn't even a good one. It's got more than one thing wrong with it." (J\' G_ay International Raceway Fairmont City, illinois Resuhs:August13,1995 SUPERB IKE QUALIFYING: 1. Steve Crevier (1,29.919); 2.
