Utah's Mel Kimball earned the final $100 in the class at 15th place and 210 feet. Both Open classes had a straighter shot at the hill, though the trail was still hairy. Heavy rains this year destabilized the lower part of the hill and caused slides, leaving several natural undercut stair steps in the initial part of the slope. Once past the first steps, the rider's faced a man-made vertical step roughly 10 feet high. If they managed to .get over that, climbers would then face a 70-degree scree slope leading up to the vertical rock face - ensuring that things would remain interesting. Beer topped the Ope'n Rubber-tire class with his 15.439-second run over local riders Dave Johnston 05.727) and past winner Shannon Chamberlain (16.122) on a wildly modified long-travel Harley-Davidson Sportster! The Unlimited classes are basically run-what-ya-brung from fuel Harleys to Peterson's bike with the two CR500R engines. Any type of tire and steel paddles are legal, and most riders opt for a rubber paddle tire or a street tire with steel paddles chained onto it. Whitlock's winning time was 14.198 over KTM550mounted Steve Stith (14.465) and KX500-mounted Payne 05.089). The Open Unlimited class featured Peterson drawing the first ride, considered a major disadvantage. He nevertheless went right over the top and his time held for the remainder of the first round. As run after run was made the hill had become rutted, putting the fourcylinders of Whitlock and Mel and Kenny Kimball at a disadvantage to the narrower Harleys and Peterson's twin. Peterson's fast time allowed him to take a bye, and he wouldn't have to run again unless his time was beaten. Whitlock, Mel Kimball and Chamberlain eventually posted faster times, but despite having to wait nervously through both sets of runs for his final attempt, 19-year-old Peterson dragged himself out of the outhouse near the start in time to post the final - and (Above) Open Rubber-tire class winner Dusty Beer shoots for the top In the o-6OOcc class. . Pederson contemplates the theory of gravity on a nearvertical section of the 300-plus-foot hili. fastest - time of the day to win the richest and most prestigious class with a 13.275 time. In addition to the other classes, the BMC also conducts the Montana State championship at this event. The top six finishers in the two tire classes face off for a two-run, sudden-death championship to decide the new state champ. Neal Payne, from Colorado oddly enough, is the new Montana state champ. t:N Billings Motorcycle Club Billings, Montana Resuhs: July 29-30, 1995 S.turd.ay so: 1. Matthew Coleman; 2. Tanaya Peck; 3.
