. DrRT TRAOK..' . AlIA Gnlnd _NaIIOnaI, Qlalnpioilllhip Series . Round 14: Black Hills Speedway (Left) Chris carr, Scott Parker and WIll Davis _reall smiles In the winner's circle. Csrr overtook Davis for II8COI1d In the series point standings snd sits 46 points behind leader Parker. ! ~ 20 worked again. 1 went down there again hoping that nobody else had seen it." Davis' line appeared to work for about six laps before he was caught by the Hacker/Parker duel; Varnes had already slipped off the pace by going wide in turns three and four on the second lap. Parker then shook off Hacker and caught Davis on the back straight on lap six before driving around Davis on the high line in turns three and four to lead the field across the stripe on lap eight. "1 picked a couple of .lines that worked," Parker said. "1 stayed one or two laps with them, then 1 just went high in three and four once or twice. That was that." Though it appeared that Parker then began to steadily pull away, he claims that was not the case. "My fastest lap was a 23:19, "Parker said. "The rest were 24 something. 1 never changed all day long. They (other riders) all started going up and down. They were fast and then they were slow." One thing was for sure. Once Parker had the lead, he had it for good - barring a mechanical breakdown. None would come. Meanwhile, Hacker was beginning to give Davis fits as th.e youngster also flashed around the outside of the R&R rider to claim second. Davis then made the mistake of pulling into line behind Hacker. "1 can't say enough about my mechanic," Hacker said. "He did a great job on my bike. He never gave up. He just kept working on it until 1 was comfortable on it. 1 was still having trouble getting through one and two." Davis then returned to the bottom of the track and made time on Hacker Carr was also on the move as he and mechanic Kenny Tolbert had also finally gotten a handle on their motorcycle. 'We ran a new chassis with the same geometry as the one that we had won with here last year," Carr said. "It worked all right in practice, and then it got worse in the heat. We made about four different changes for the main event." Apparently they worked as Carr caught Davis, who then went back to the low post. Both riders then managed to get around Hacker on lap 22. Varnes made his way back to fifth after'dispensing with Kopp and Pegram. But they all chased Parker back to the line, and the factory's number-one dirt tracker had given a win to the Harley faithful in attendance and put another notch on his victory holster. Afterward Parker praised the race track preparation. "The track was excellent. It was safe." Parker said. "We have had some of the best tracks to race on this year that we've had in years. But it doesn't matter. Everybody's got to race on the race track. 1 don't care if its smooth or a hole hopper. Bill and 1 will adapt. Just like all this talk of all these half miles. 1 don't care if they want to run 29 short tracks and ITs. We'll adapt." But can Parker adapt in such a way that won't make such a thorough domination boring? "Hey," Parker said. "1 don't mind winning by inches as long as you can guarantee that 1 will." Fortunately for Parker, and for his competition, there are no guarantees in racing.
