_ J NIt'IJI, (Left) Charley Bogard (10) dominated the 250cc Intermediate ranks, winning all four motos with apparent ease. win went to Bauder, with Bogard second. Idaho's Danny Smith, Leath and Brett Racine roundeq out the top five. Bogard did rebound in the 250cc Intermediate classes, where he won the Stocl< and Modified classes with ease. The rising Suzuki star swept all four motos aboard his RM250. Pat Foster and Brian Stone chased Bogard home in the stock class, and Chris Torrance and Billy Binckley were second and third in the Modified class. Perhaps the most asked question at Amateur Nationals is, "Who will replace Ricky Carmichael as King of the Minis when he moves to the 125cc class?" R&D Racing's Justin Buckelew may have finally answered that question, as he posted two class victories by winning every moto th~t he entered in the 80cc 12-13 year-old Stock and Modified classes. His formula for winning appears to be similar to Carmichael's: Pull the holeshot, turn in a couple blazing laps, and go on to ride reserved, mistake-free motos. In the Stock main, Buckelew holeshot, but had Brian McGavran, Jonathan Shimp, Johnny Marley and Ivan Tedesco in tow. McGavran gave chase on his fa~oryHonda CR80, but he was no match for Buckelew, who pinned it longer on the straights, gassed it harder in the turns, and flew further over the jumps en route to the win. McGavran ended up second, much to the delight of Honda Mini Team Race Coordinator Bill Orr. "The team is pretty much whaf we expected," said Orr. "Their new bikes have been under development for the last year and now o.ur team is showing that they are very potent." The Honda mini effort will continue throughout the rest of the '95 season, and will travel to all H.ve Amateur Nationals in '96 in search of some class championships. The two rider team includes McGavran in the 12- to 13-year-old class, and Danny Carlson in the 14- to 16-year-old division. They will join past factory Honda mini stars Mike' Healey, Mouse McCoy and Rick Simmet. Buckelew also controlled the pace in the Modified class, as he topped Shimp and Tedesco with ease. And what about the all-conquering 60cc machine, where he pulled holeshot after holeshot on his Cycle Engineeringprepared machine. Unfortunately, crash after crash kept him from scoring a win, and he ended up third in the Jr. Cycle Stock and Modified 9-11 year-old classes. Bess finished behind Chase Reed and Gene Stull in the Stock race after a last lap crash in the mud blew out his chance for the title. In the Modifted class, another crash cost him that title as well, and he finished behind Reed and Josh Hansen, the son of former Supercross and 250cc National Champion Donnie Hansen. f.N Ricky Carmichael? It was business as usual: Carmichael raced in six motos and won all of them. This year, however, there were a handful of riders who actually kept Carmichael in sight. Local hero Jacob'Martin kept close tabs on . Carmichael throughout the 14- to 16year-old Modified race. Martin was impressive as he was armed with a hungrier attitude. "I only have 10 motos left on an 80, and I am counting them down," said Martin. "Then I will go to California to get my 125cc bikes, and we'll be testing with Greg Albertyn at Suzuki." And then there was the ll-year-old giant, Travis Pastrana, who kept a close eye on Carmichael in the Super Mini class. Pastrana stayed within three seconds of KIDg Carmichael for most of the two motos. Pastrana, as expected, had no problem in either 80cc 0- to ll-yearold class, topping Ben Riddle and Chase Reed in the Stock class, and Reed and Shime Bess in the Modified class.
