·EVENTS·. victory in the 10-bike Pro field at Whiplash Motorsports' Cinder Mountain 100 cross country. Located in a geological wonderland, the Cinder Hills 100 was run on towering lOoo-foothigh piles of volcanic cinders, and the reduced air pressure at the 7000-foot altitude made riding the technical course a challenge for both man and machine. Starting in the second of many four-rider rows, Abbott was ready for the challenge and chased down Scottsdale Mercedes-Benz dealer Mike Schumacher on the ex-Willy Musgrave CRSOO Honda. Completing that final move after traveling some IS miles into the fust of five upand-down 2a-mile laps, Abbott did not !rl\Iy go into cruise mode, but he did take time to wave and style for the large crowd scattered around the cinder hills. Abbott raced to a stunning 13minute victory over pal Bryan Bruning's borrowed, but similar, KX5OO. Abbott had a few blisters but called it a "nice, easy ride," except for the "lappers that were so slow!" He admitted to hitting one rider at speed "but did not go down." In the Super Senior class, Don Bull continued his domination as the only one of the 10 graying competitors to do four laps. (Whiplash waves the checkered flag when the overall winner crosses the line, so the following riders are stopped whether they have completed all laps or not.) "This season seems to be good. for me," a winded Bull said as he smiled over an ale. "It was hot, hard, dusty... and Destry. I was dying the last lap. I was bappy to see that number-one plate (Abbott) pass me." Bull's closest competition included the rare appearance of Himey Means, riding a borrowed YZ2S0. Means suffered a few tumbles in the soft marbles but still edged third-placed joe Prosser, who also went down in the same check-two turn as Means. Results 0/A: I. Destry Abbott (Kaw); 2.
