it a great three-rider battle for the lead. Honnold got sideways in the LACR sand and lost
momentum in a comer, allowing Blanton and
Tarwater to get away. Tarwater hounded Blanton all the way to the white flag where Blanton
mistakenly pulled off the track, thinking he had
seen the checkered. Tarwater was handed the
lead, the second moto win and overall honors.
Blanton re-entered the race to finish second.
Gary Thompson was nothing short of awesome in the 250cc Novice class, nailing both
holeshots and walking away from the field. Phil
Zackrison and Bob Arens came out on the top of
the final lap to secure second place.

Kevin Tarwater and Gary Thompson claimed
overall wins in the l25cc and 250cc Novice c1asses, respectively, during California Racing Club's
Saturday-night motocross at Los Angeles CoontyRaceway.
Chris Blanton was quickest out of the gate to
lead Wes Dell, Victor Banuelos Jr. and Jason
Clark in the first 125cc Novice malo. Tarwater
gated poorly, but with only a lap completed he
worked his way past both Banuelos and Dell
and aet out after leader Blanton. Blanton held his
own to take the mota win as Tarwater tried too
hard to find a way around and suffered numerous small bobbles in the last lap.
Blanton get another good start in round two,
but this time Chris Honnold and Tarwater made

Plass performs at

Claiming both hoInhots and wire-to-wire mota
wins, Kenny Plass was the top pefwuoer in the
l2Scc Amateur CIasa at Suffolk Madows MX.
Plass kicked off malo one by nailing down
the holeshot, then leading the pecl< through tum
one. Joseph Bisbee, Mike Rausch, and James
Williams chased Plass through the su,percross
section. In the back sand-bowl, Plass increued
his lead advantage while Bisbee and Rausch
heated up the second-place battle. Rausch made
his move and got by Bisbee, and as the mota
wound down the positions remained the same.
Plass went on to score the first-moto win as
Rausch claimed second place and Bisbee placed
third. Plass was again the holeshot artist as he
led the challengers through the first left-hander
at the start of mota two. Bisbee, Williams, and
Rausch started with a second-place shuffle
behind Plass. Rausch was on the gas and quickly
jumped ahead to secure the second-place position. Bisbee settled in the third-place slot as
Williams trailed in fourth. With Plass running in
front, Rausch started to close tfie lead advantage
as Bisbee and WiUiams were waging their own
battle in third. Plass wicked up his Long Island
Kawasaki/Mom & Dad-supported KX to nab
the second-mota and overall win. Oakdale Cycle
and Marine-sponsored Rausch finished second
on his Suzuki. The battle for third ended when
Bisbee finished ahead of Williams.

Gaherty rules Heartland
Park Road Race
By Bob Appleviite
TOPEKA, KS,jULYl5-16
Local racer Michael Gaherty won seven of eight
races entered at round two of the Championship
Cup Series Great P1ains event at Heartland Park
in Topeka.
The Honda 600-mounted rider kicked off his
weekend on a down note, crashing in the tricJcy
turn 14 while leading GTU, handing the win
over to Paul Mason, who later crashed in the
same turn as Gaherty. But Gaherty bounced
back in GTO talcing the win from the pole, outriding several 7505 and 900s on his way to the
c:hedered flag.
Another hot local, John Layton rounded out
Saturday's events with double wins, taking the
checkered in both Lightweight Supersport and
Lightweight Supertwins classes, winning both
races from the pole while leading every lap. layton wrapped up his Lightweight sweep with the
win in the Superbike contest OIl Sunday.
Sunday proved to be Gaherty's day on
Heartland Park's 2.S-mile, l4-turn course. A
sports car race the previous weekend coupled
with high temperalures made the track surface
lriclcy for two-wheeled action.
"The track was really slick Sunday and has
gotten lcind of bumpy:' said Gaherty.
After Ken Krebs led the Unlimited Supersport battle early, Gaherty took the point and
never looked back, earning his first win of Sunday. Krebs was later vindicated with a win in
the Middleweight GP feature.
Amateur Honda Hawk rider Pat Finn
proved himseU to be the best of the day in the
Heavyweight Twins battle, with a last-lap, lasttum pass WI John Layton for the win. Fmn doubled with a win in Lightweight Twins as well.
The rest of Sunday afternoon's program was
Michael Gaherty's. He won six races on his
Dell's Honda/Competitive Edge Racing/Michelin/Walt Schaerer/Tsubaki/SharbIeinz-sponsored CBR600, all on the same set of tires.
Gaherty wasn't completely uncontested as
Shane Clarke gave him a run for his money in
the Unlimited GP. Clarke, who changed from
Honda to Kawasaki in '9S, jumped out to an
early lead on his ZX6. Clarke wrestled a Iesstha~-handIing Kawasaki until Gaherty
got .by on lap six of eight for the win and the
majority of the 5750 in the CCS purse.
