"EVENTS .Edited bySC~R~sseau . with Roeseler the entire race, 'but missed a few turns here and there that added up to the two-minute margin that the Roeseler/Dunlap team won by. "1 don't think 1 ever got out of fifth (gear)," Hoy said. "1 overshot a comer and hit a huge ditch and went into the bushes." The two-track roads were very fast and very dusty. Veteran racer Rusty Clarke, a back-of-the-pack starter, was able to catch Senior (40+) rider Bob Van Dyke but could not get by until the 20mile mark. The Baja vet - Van Dyke - brought his KX into the rider-swap area with a flat front tire, but didn't know it was flat at the time. "1 was tapped out the whole time," said Van Dyke, "and 1 didn't know it was flat:' Second-loop rider John Alexander elected to protect their class lead by just . adding air in the tire and going for it. Alexander, who finished second in the 250cc class at the recent Baja 500, found that decision to be imprudent. He would later wash out and in the ensuing tumble break his left collarbone. Again. Rancho Suspension's Dave Simpson, who had competed in the 1994 Camel Trophy endurance event, soloed to the Vet Pro win and fourth overall. Bob Surmon felt the effects of bronchitis and faded to third Open Pro and fifth overall. (;N Midnight Romp Cellfoml8 City, CA Results: July 15 O/A: 1. Larry Roeseler/Regie Ounlar. (Kaw); 2. By Tony Tellier CALIFORNIA CITY, CA, JULY 15 eam Green icon Larry Roeseler and Regie Dunlap "un-retired" to win Baja Promotions' first running of the California City Midnight Romp desert team race, while Todd Hoy soloed to a respectable second overall finish. And that wasn't all for RoeseIer. Not long after stepping off his winning Kawasaki KX500, Roeseler strapped himself into a Ford pick up truck - along with co-driver Rod Muller - and ran away with the overall win in the fourwheel race. The two-lap affair in the motorcycle race was run over 50 miles of vestigial California City subdivision roads. Some 20 years after being plotted, the barren "City" spraWl is now available for racing provided that the race courses be made up of "existing trails." Once Kawasaki-mounted Roeseler got by the front-row starter, "San Felipe Bob" Surmon (who left the starting line at 4 p.m.), and passed Hoy and Kirk Naylor, it was full throttle all the way for the multi-time Baja 500 and 1000 winner. Over the wide-open, T almost rockless desert, Hoy simply admitted that, "Larry's (KX500) was just faster than my KTM." Larry completed his first lap in 46 minutes with Hoy coming into the pits just a tick later. In the latter stages of the second lap, Roeseler turned the Team Green Thor /Dunlop/Oakley /Bel Ray /DPR racing machine over to off-road truck fabricator Dunlap, who said that the final "14 miles of road was scary pinned." Dunlap, who can usually be found riding shotgun in Jason Baldwin's Unlimited Trophy Truck in SCORE series off-road events, ought to know, admitting that this rare (for him) motorcycle race was·fun. Dunlap completed the Roeseler team's two 55-milelap run in an elapsed time of 1:32:53 with an average speed of 71 mph to score the overall win and the Pro Open Motorcycle class. KTM's Hoy was second overall and finished less than two minutes back with a time of 1:34:32. Along the way, Hoy hit a bird at speed. Then his bike started to run lean. He was able to stay Walker wallops Pro Sport MX By Barbara Williams WYTHEVILLE, VA,JULYl6 either searing summer heat nor sudden thunderstorm could slow Kevin Walker as he racked up another six perfect motos, adding victories in 12Sec A, 250cc A and 25+ A races to his resume and $350 to his wallet at· Pro Sport MX. Nearly 450 riders gathered to contend for the Virginia State MX Championships, round 12 of the AMA Pizza Plus US MegaSeries: Two short intermissions were necessary during the second round of motos to water the track. Then, with a few motos to go, a drenching downpour settled the aust for the day. Walker was unfazed by the extremes, and his dependable Yamaha of Kingsport rides carried him to decisive wins. Walker's only real competition in 250cc A and 25+ A action came from Billy Liles, who pulled a couple of holeshots on the YZ pilot and made sure that Walker didn't have any opportunity to relax. All year long the Walker/Liles battle has raged, and so far Walker has consistently come out on top. In fact, Walker already has the MegaSeries Championship locked up for the 125cc A division and will most N likely become the 25+ A champ as well. Liles is closer to victory in the 250cc A points race, and some extremely bad luck for Walker, coupled with things staying the same for Liles, could foreseeably upset Walker's plans for a repeat crown. In the 125cc A clash, GayIon Dickson Jr. stuck close to Walker in the hot first moto, but couldn't seem to mount a drive to go past him, and Walker took the win. Dickson inherited the point position when Walker splashed down in the whoops early in the rainy 12Sec A second moto. Once back underway, however, Walker handled the slippery muck as if it were dry, and two laps later was once again in control for the moto and overall win. The B classes were not nearly so predictable. In both motos of 125 and 250cc B, anyone of four riders could be out front on any given lap: Jarrett Tipping, Kurt Sims, Mitchell Hodges, or Marcus Hedrick. Hodges and Brian Stone traded moto wins in the 125cc B class and Stone came up with the overall victory via his 3-1 placings. Tipping won the 250cc B class with 1-3 finishes, followed by Sims (4-1), Hedrick (3-2), Hodges (25) and Stone (5-4). (;N R....1ts 50 (4-6), 1. Chase BecJc (LEM); 2. Logan BeD (LEM); 3.
