Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan has signed legislation that will establish selffunded rider education in the state, according to the AMA The law makes Missouri the 45th state to offer motorcycle training to its residents through a program paid for by motorcycle riders. With less than two weeks left in Mis$ouri's scheduled legislative session, it appeared that time was running out for passage of a rider-education bill this year. But motorcycle activists, led by the AMA-chartered Freedom of Road Riders of Missouri, found an unrelated bill in the state's House of Representatives to which they could attach their rider- education legislation. The House bill, H.B. 717, originally addressed commercial vehicle and federal compliance issues, but the bill's sponsor, Rep. Don Prost (D-Caruthersville), agreed to attach the rider-education amendment to it. The bill passed the Legislature with the amendment intact and will take effect on August 28. The new rider-ed.ucation program will be funded by a $2.75 surcharge on motorcycle instruction permits and a $5 court fee on traffic violations involving a motorcycle. The court fee will be doubled to $10 for infractions involving alcohol. The money will be deposited into a motorcycle safety account that will be used to administer the program. Successful completion of the program will enable new license applicants to obtain a motorcycle endorsement without having to take the skills test at state licensing agencies. An additional amendment Slight/Okada win Suzuka 8-Hour N ew Zealander Aaron Slight (right) combined efforts with Japan's Tadayuki Okada to win the CocaCola suzuka 8-Hour endurance race on July 30 at the suzuka Circuit in suzuka City, Japan. The factory Honda mounted duo completed 212 laps and 771 miles in the eight-hour race, topping a second factory Honda RVF750 ridden by shinichi Itoh and satoshi Tsujimoto by 46.846 seconds. The victory was Slight's third in a row in the prestigious 'race; the Kiwi teamed with Scott Russell to win on a Kawasaki in 1993, before racing a Honda to victory last year with Doug :rolen. It was Okada, though, who did the fastest lap times with Slight ·maintaining therr edge despite a Saturday crash that left him with minor leg and hand injuries. "I didn't think I could win after free practice on Saturday," Slight said on the podium. "Okada was very fast and helped me." "Arigato (thank you)," Okada said to the fans.. "When Slight crashed, it was uncertain whether he could race or not. But he was very tough guy. I just kept pace and passed the bike to Slight." Third place went to the factory Kawasaki team of Akira Yanagawa and Katsuaki Fujiwara with the factory Yamaha of Norihiko Fujiwara and Wataru Yoshikawa. The first American was Colin Edwards II, who combined with his Yamaha World superbike teammate Yasutomo Nagai to finish fifth; Fred Merkel and Australian Peter Goddard were sixth on a factory Suzuki. . AMA superbike National Championship points leader Mike Hale and his teammate Takuma Aoki suffered through a few crashes and a one-lap penalty to eventually finish 32nd, the number one Kawasaki pairing of Anthony Gobert and Keiichi Kitagawa also suffered crashes to end up an eventual 13th. ~MA announces ISDE teams T he AMA has officially announced the 37 riders who will represent the United States. at the 1995 International Six Day Enduro in Jelenia Gora, Poland, on September 18-23.
