Everyone else was running in the middle. 1 was cutting 40 feet off the track in the turns." Though Hacker still ran alone, Parker was on the move, and on laps 18 and 19, Parker gave Hacker a couple of looks to the inside. On lap 20, Hacker moved off line ever so slightly in turns one and two, and Parker pounced. "1 looked back and they (Parker and Carr) were a long way back:' Hacker said. "Then 1 looked back again and they were right on my tail." Parker shot up underneath to take control just before flagman Steve Feracci gave the pair the five-lap sign. Hacker got a little wild in his attempts to repass Parker, but then the 19-year-old quickly settled down and began to devise a plan. "1 studied him for one or two laps:" Hacker said. '1 figured if 1 got all riled up and started making stupid moves, it wouldn't do me any good. But if 1 stayed calm, the worst 1 could get was a podium finish. That ain't bad." But Hacker stilI refused to concede the win to Parker as the white flag flashed, and he picked his shot at the champ with the care of a marksman, going deep into tum three and then pulling wide off four for an outside pass attempt. '1t was all 1 had:' Hacker said. '1 figured 1 had a fifty-fifty chance." But Parker left nothing to chance, and though Hacker ducked ahead of Parker briefly, Parker was flat hooked up, and he crossed the line to collect win number 64 no more or less easily than the other 63. '1 don't care who it was:' Parker said. "1 knew it was going to be tough for him to pass me on the outside. What he should have done was try to go higher yet and see if he could find some' traction."
