Posca, La Monte post
wins at LACR Motocross
By Greg Robertson
PALMDALE,CA,jULY8 .
Both Ito Posca and George La Monte made the
successful transition from 80ce to 125cc
machines at their California Racing Club debut
during Saturday night motocross races at Los
Angeles County Raceway.
Posca swept the 125cc Novice class with a
perfect I-I score. La Monte finished second in
the first 12Sec Beginner moto, then came back
from a crash and being in last place to finish
third in the second round and take runner-up
honors behind the Honda of Malt Goldsmith.
The opening 12Sec Novice race had Posca's
name written all over it. The Team Green/
FMF I Answer ISmifh/Varner-backed Posca
ruled the roost from the drop of the gate to the
tune of a 15-second lead when the checkers feU.
Chris Blanton ran a lonely second and would
finish in that spot. Tyler Buck took a hardfought third just in front of Taylor Vanderpool
and Alvin Zalamea.
Posca holeshot moto two but Chris Honnold
shot past him and into the lead on their first
pass under the over-and-under jump. Honnold
opened up a slight lead as Posea came under fire
from Blanton in third. Posea shook Blanton and
reeled Honnold back in with a lap remaining.
Posca hooked up better coming out of a turn and
outdragged Honnold down a flat straight to
retake the lead. Posca took the very close win
over Honnold with Blanton a few feet back in
third.
La Monte holeshot his first-ever 125ee Beginner race ahead of Dustin Courtney, leff Eide and
Goldsmith. Halfway through the second lap
Courtney dived underneath La Monte to grab
the lead that he would never relinquish. La
Monte took second, weU ahead of a good battle
for third between Goldsmith and Eide that
Goldsmith would eventuaUy win.
Gabi Abayou's second-moto lead lasted only
a few turns before Courtney took control and
started to puU away. Joe Barker and Goldsmith
argued over third while La Monte took a soil
sample then got restarted in 17th place. Courtney was cruising out front with a lO-second
cushion at the halfway point as La Monte had
already sliced his way back up to seventh place.
Disaster struck Courtney as he puUed off the
track with a tremendous lead on the final lap
with bike problems. Goldsmith was handed the
moto and overaD wins. La Monte worked aD the
way up to third behind Eide at the checkers for a
well-deserved. second overall.

Looking like the world's fastest novice, Steve
Sabin was unstoppable in the 40+ Novice class
with back-to-back wins on a beautiful Montesa,
leaving Husqvarna-mounted Steve Heck with
two second-place finishes and a weU-earned second overall. When the last checkered flag
dropped Egloff was ready to rest. Racing five
different events took its toll on the veteran, but
his five top-three finishes more than made up
for the exhaustion. At the trophy presentation
later, Egloff, far too tired to walk up and receive
his trophies, had to remain seated while the
. awards were delivered to him. Now /lUll'S tired.

Murphree targets
Lawrenceburg DT shootout
By John Spurrier
LAWRENCEBURG, IN, JUNE 31
John Murphree of Paso Robles, California, survived a series of drag races into the first turn
with local expert Pat Behrle in a 600cc Pro-Am
feature that took four restarts and an intermission to complete. Murphree and Behrle both
won their heat races, placing them side by side
on the front row in the feature.
The first start saw the pair lead the ll-rider
field into. turns one and two only to be greeted
by waving flags and red tights as the middle of
the pack tried to go three wide through turn
two. Ben BeUman and California's Steve Johnson
bit the dust in the melee. 80th riders were able
to continue.
The restart only lasted one lap as starter Rick
Tibbetts was displeased by some questionable
starting-line tactics and threw the red flag. On
the third try, Behrle won the drag race to turn
one but once again the race was halted as Tony
Moore hit the waD coming onto the back stretch
and Curt Sne1ling hit Moore's bike. Both riders
got up unhurt and everyone lined up for another try. When the green light flashed, Murphree
won the drag race to turn one, but the red lights
came on again as Bellman got knocked. down
and Johnson went with him.
At this point the starter decided to let everybody cool off and caUed up the Over 30 race to
run in the meantime.
When 600cc Pro-Am field was brought out
for another try, Behrle got the holeshot and exited turn two leading Murphree, Tommy Hensler,
BeUman, Sam Lowe and the pack. Behrle's lead
was short-lived as his engine blew on the lap

Behrle back at
Lawrenceburg Pro-Am
By John Spurrler
LAWRENCEBURG, 1N,/ULY7
Pat Behrle, who exited early from last week's
600cc Pro-Am Feature with a blown engine,
returned to the fray with a fresh engine and
dominated both his heat race and the sevenrider feature. Mike Butler returned from semiretirement to run a solid second until a last-lap
low-side in turn one dropped him back to seventh.
Butler kept the engine alive, remounted, and
repassed two riders to claim the fifth-place finish. Tommy Hensler took second place, followed
by Joe Seyfferle, Curt SneUing, Butler, Ron Gardner, and Tom Cochran.
m the combined 250cc Pro-Ami Amateur
feature, Tommy Hensler was the overall winner
followed by Cory Roth, Joel Brown, Phil Wolf,
Zach Palmer and Travis Burnett. Hensler was a
guaranteed winner in the Pro-Am class with the
absence of rival Sam Lowe, who is recovering
from surgery on his broken hip sustained last
Saturday evening at the Converse, Indiana, \tallmile. Also missing was Gary Stogsdill, as he too
was recovering from surgery to repair his back
injury, sustained'in last week's crash at
Lawrenceburg. Like Palmer in the 80cc feature,
Hensler found the slick spot in tum four and
barely avoided being high-sided. Hensler celebrated his win with a wheelie on the back
stretch; however, halfway through he lost it, and
crashed in a heap. Hensler was uninjured.

Cooper cooks at
Treaty City Motocross
By Mark M. BI188
GREENVlLLE,OHIO,jULY9 .
The team F&S Suzuki nationaI squad was fuUy
represented at the July 9 round of the Treaty
City MX schedule with former 125cc national
champion Guy Cooper narrowly stealing victoty
on the tie breaker in the 125cc A class.
As good as the other raemg was, the eightliter class proved to be the premier class of the
afternoon. As the 17 riders blasted their machines
toward the first turn, it was crowd favorite Coop,er who grabbed the holeshot. His lead would be
short-lived, however, as halfway through lap one
Yezek shot into the lead and never looked back,
finishing with eight seconds to spare over Cooper. TreadweU finished third over a hard-<:harging
Steel, who had gated poorly and made up a sui:>slantial amount of ground by moto's end. Chuck
Reed rounded out the top five.
