The Frenchman, who is now the sporting director for Yamaha's World Superbike team of Colin Edwards II and Yasutomo Nagai, was recruited by Yamaha to guide the willing members of the media on a fast lap around Laguna. All survived. 1"11 • ~ The troubles of Pascal Picotte oontinued at seca, Laguna at least during Friday's first session. While battling the world's best superbike racers is difficull enough, Picotte's one and only Kawasaki lasted only fIVe laps in the first practice sesslon. Despite missing most of the valuable session, the French Canadian managed to finish 15th and 11 th in the two World Superbike races. Despite rumors to the contrary, Colin Edwards U is in the final year of his oontraet with Yamaha. The 21-year-old is currently 11th in the World Superbike Championship. Flu-ridden Simon Cralar spent his time between the two World Superbike races at Laguna Seca with a doctor. As one of his Australasian crew members said: "He's been crook all week." German Jochen SChmid had a weekend he'd rather forget. In case getting his cornputer stolen from his ptt wasn~ enough, the Kawasaki rider crashed out of both races. Race-one winner' Anthony Gobert was scheduled to depart the Untted States on Monday afternooo for his trip to the Suzuka a-Hour. Gobert was scheduled to ride the Lucky Strike-backed Kawasaki with former teammate Scott Russell, but Russell's injury at the British Grand Prix at Donington Park on July 23 may mean that Gobert will be teamed with a Japanese rider. Freddie Spencer dropped out of the second race with a broken transmission on his Fast By Ferracci Ducati. "tt started jumping out of gear on the warmup lap," Spencer said. "On the first lap tt jumped out again out of three and then out of five tt jumped out of fourth gear. Then I hit neutral going into the Corkscrew and I had to lock up the rear brake to get tt stopped. After that I rode it back to the ptts.
