the field but held it on in the first tum to get to
fifth place as they went through the tricky
grandstand whoops section. Buehl. Gaylon
Dickson and Josh Steel were between Yezek and
Eickel, but Yezek was flying, passing two riders
on the first lap to close on Buehl. Yezek blasted
through the grandstand whoops past Buehl and
began to cut into Eickel's four-second lead. Eickel held the lead for four more laps before Yezek
dove to the inside of a turn on the back side of
the track and block-passed his way into the lead
permanently.
In moto two, Eickel pulled another holeshot
ahead of Gaylon Dickson, Joey Defelice and
Yezek. Buehl got a horrible start, but he got a
break when four riders, including DeMuth,
crashed together giving Buehl a little clear bit of
track to ride down the leaders. Dickson tried to
pass Eickel in the same place in which Yezek
passed Eickel in moto one, but Eickel fought him
off to hold on to the top spot. Dickson had to
regroup after his pass attempt failed and Yezek
took advantage of it and swooped past Dick·
son's Yamaha in the sweeper after the big triple
jump. Defelice led Buehl for fourth as the field
completed the first lap. Defelice then crashed on
lap two and fell off the pace, moving Buehl closer to the leaders. Yezek caught Eickel in the
infield whoops, but Eickel had the hot line and
held him off.
Half a lap later, Yezek block-passed Eickel in
the tum at the end of the grandstand whoops to
take over the lead. Dickson held onto third place
ahead of Buehl, Craig Billingsley and Steel.

Welton takes off at
Stapleton Airport Road Race
By TIm Wolf
DENVER, CO, JUNE 18
Round four of the Motorcycle Roadrncing Ass0ciation series was held at a new race facility that
also included some new faces in the winner's
circle. Stapleton International Airport was the
new venue and Brandon Welton, riding his
Loveland Motorsports CBR900 power plant
mounted in a 600 frame, was the new winner in
the Race of the Rockies.
The course was laid out on the north runway
and 'featured 14 turns contrasted by long, long
straightaways. The heavyweight bikes would
easily run in the 160- to 170-mph range. Track
safety at these speeds would normally be a big
concern, but the track is so wide that any number of lines could be used and runoff area was
no problem as there is nothing but miles of runway pavement if a fider exits the track.
Ricky Orlando riding his Cycles of Boulder
Kawasaki ZX-9 led the start of the Race of the
Rockies over Brandon Welton, Donnie Hough,
Shane Turpin and Mark Schellinger. Horsepower and the ability to maintain high cornering
speeds were needed to stay with the front-runners as the Orlando, Shellinger and Welton trio
started to break away from the field of 44 riders.
YZF-mounted Hough and Phase One Hondabacked Turpin were two seconds behind the
front group in a fight over fourth.
By the fourth lap, Welton had worked his
way by Orlando for first and opened up a slight
lead, but defending champion Mark Shellinger
on his Vanmar Plastics YZF had also passed
Orlando and was beginning to run down the
Honda rider. Schellinger was up to leader Welton's rear wheel by the halfway point of the 12lap race and pa sed at the end of the super-fast
back straight for the point position.
On lap eight, Shellinger pulled off the track
near the start/finish line with mechanicai problems, thus handing the lead back to Welton, who
put his head down and rode to his first victory
in !he Race of the Rockies. Orlando rode to second with Hough getting the better of Turner for
third. Turpin finished fifth.
