Hoenig Photos by Flat Trak Fotos SEDAUA, MO, JULY 22 ith' the 1995 AMA Grand National Championship Series. already nearing the halfway point, it could be argued that Will Davis has come closer than anyone to not winning a Grand National round. The hard-eharging North Carolinian has led in practically all of the rounds thus far, only to fade back to just off the podium in most of them. It's been worse than that, too, as unsatisfying results have been mixed with the heartbreak of suffering a mechanical failure while leading on the white flag lap at the Springfield Mile as well as flat failing to qualify for the lima Half Mile. He has visited the podium twice, with thehigh points of his season being a second-place finish at the LaSalle Short Track followed by a third-place finish at the Dallas Half Mile one week later. But any way you look at it, Davis was having a trying season, and he was due. When all was said and done at the Missouri State Fair Speedway, Davis finally had added his name to the everincreasing list of winners in the 1995 W Grand National Championship Series. With eleven races in the book, nine riders have scored wins; only defending Grand National Champion and current points leader Scott Parker has multiple wins - with three. Despite overnight rains, the half mile, located on the site of the Missouri State Fair, started the day dry and dusty.
