I··EVENTS Arnold grabbed the holeshot again in the 250cc class, but not without challenges from David Key and Mark Baxely. At the finish, Arnold notched the victory, followed by Key and Baxely. It appeared that Arnold had the Open Amateur title all wrapped up after leading most of the race, but he went down in the second comer on the last lap. David Harter, Bachman and Chris Harter went by Arnold to claim first, second and third-place finishes, respectively. Results DFC: 1. Ray Arnold (Yam); 2. Greg Fountain and Mike Shoemaker have been hattling for the SRA Vet class number-one plate at the Southland Racing Association Grands Prix, and that battle heated up once again when the SRA returned to Glen Helen Raceway for the midseason event. However, Sunday's event went to neither Fountain nor Shoemaker as Drey Dircks powered his XR600 to the Vet Expert I Amateur win. Dircks rounded the first lap about three seconds behind Fountain as he was followed by Bob Maxwell, Shoemaker, and Chad Blough, respectively. Dircks t~en made the pass on Fountain through the deep whoop section. Shoemaker was riding a pace unlike his normal, front-of-the-pack speed, as he was reportedly testing his new CRSOO in preparation for the Mammoth Mountain MX. By mid-moto, Shoemaker had upped the pace a couple of notches, moved around Maxwell and clbsed on Fountain, who looked to be quite comfortable in second. Foun.tain was the only Vet rider jumping the huge doubles, but he was still caught by Shoemaker and finished third. Paul Vogelsang, third in the points and riding in second place through the first couple of turns, dropped his YZ250 prior to exiting the infield and spent the day in seventh. dicing with Mark Cervais who finished eighth. ROSEBURG, OR, JULY 2 Beau Brown and the father-and-son duo of Bob and 50 Ingle knocked out the competition at the third round of the eighth-mile short track series at Diamond Raceway. Brown, riding his Kawasaki, breezed to a win in the 125cc A main over 50 Ingle, and then backed it up with top 2SOcc honors in the combined 250/500cc A main. Bo Ingle was too much for the competition in the 80cc Expert class, and though newcomer Timmy Ricketts did all he could to get past Ingle. his drive fell short. Damien Saltzman took third away from Sean Light, who shook off the effects of a horrible crash to finish fourth ahead of Chris Linder. Undoubtedly the best race of the season was the Open A main. Bob Ingle took immediate control, but Bob Klum gave Ingle his toughest challenge thus far this season. IGum pushed Ingle the entire race as a great five-way battle for third waged behind them. The battle between Ed Derda, Brown, Oiff Helm, Jesse Miller and earl Tresser was a classic. Derda and Brown had the crowd on its feet as Brown did everything he could to get around the veteran. Ingle went on to win by a slim margin over Klum, while Derda took advantage of lapped traffic to take third. Brown netted a close fourth, and Tresser shook off Miller to take home fifth.
