.DIRT TRACK . . AlA Grand National ~hip Series. Round 9: 1·96 Speedway son-sponsored mount through the pack, just ahead of Parker and Carr. "Man these guys were just too fast," Davis said. "Early we were right there, the second half they just started coming by." Hacker was another rider moving from deep in the pack. "Man I got a terrible start," Hacker said. '1 was dead last off the line. (Below) (Left to right) Atherton, BeettIe and Pegram enjoy the spolls of the victory podium. 16 The Harley factory team crossed each other several times with Carr sinking as low as ninth before rebounding to his final position of sixth. It was just the opposite for Parker, who would rise up as far as fifth for three laps before tumbling to a 12thplace finish. "1 don't think I've ever been passed by as many people in a National," Parker said. '1 just couldn't get around consistently." Almost unnoticed was Beattie's trip to the point position. "They were all skating around the bottom," Beattie said. '1 thought, 'Screw this. I'm going to the front: I just held her wide open into three, squared off four and drove out low, but 1 had to be careful because my line crossed theirs as we exi ted four:' Before Beattie would get to the front, Davis would lead four laps, and Atherton one. But the 13th lap was lucky for Beattie as he took over for good. Atherton, Davis, King and Pegram were right behind him. '1 was trying to stay low, but after a few laps I thought the track dried out and I moved up a little," Pegram said. "I looked back. Rich and Will were down low, then Will got by and we bunched up. I lost several positions, but I saw where Steve was running after he passed me and decided to take his line as much as I could. There was room to pass most anywhere and I worked my way back, but Steve had it dialed in tonight:' Atherton and King ran second and third until King's skid shoe broke. King continued on with his shoe dangling dangerously from his ankle. . Atherton would hold second until the 23rd lap, when Pegram took over. "Turns one and two were pretty consistent, but turns three and four were changing the whole race," Atherton said. "We were everywhere from the top to bottom. I tried to copy (Beattie's) line after he got by, but it took a couple of laps to get it right. Then I was able to keep the same interval, but I couldn't close. I knew he (Pegram) was there, but I never really thought he could pass." Davis would fall victim to the hard charge of Kopp, who was bringing his Doug Donally/Dot\ahue Harley-David- bike was a Cadillac, I could ride anywhere I wanted. I just went where everyone else wasn't, whatever it took. Man, 17th to seventh, It was hooked up." Following the jubilant Beattie home were Pegram, Atherton, Kopp, Davis, Carr, Hacker, Springsteen, King and Fletcher. The next group consisted of Butler, Parker, Varnes, Jones, Landes and Poovey. Coolbeth's race was doomed by a loose knock-off on hi~ brake, dropping him from the hunt..
