.DIRT TRACK: .' . ·w Grand NaIionaIN.·MRl-..hl Series . ~_'~_'P. Round 8: Du Quoin State Fairgrounds (Left) After being credited with second piece, Atherton (left) Joined Caml/n (center) and Parker (right) on the podium. AMA officials later awarded second place to Morehead and dropped Atherton to fourth. (Below) James Hart (61) diced with Lance Jones (28C) and Mlkr Hacker (67) In yet another cloee finish during the Harley-Davidson 883cc main event Hart WIIS aWllrded the decision. second ahead of King. Farris was still right there in third, looking as strong as he had all year long, when tragedy struck on lap 18. After a lengthy delay the riders lined up for a single-file restart, and a six-lap scramble to the finish. From there, Parker once again set off in pursuit of the checkered flag, but Atherton.wasn't going to let his fellow Michigan Mafioso go at it alone, and he tagged along for the ride. Camlin looked hopelessly lost as he worked his way into fifth place then to third. Parker and Atherton were down the road, and it looked like there would be no magic on the' "Magic Mile" for Camlin on this day until along came Morehead. "I could get through one and two, but I couldn't get through three and four. Morehead started pointing at me to follow him down the back straight, but he wasn't pointing at me to follow him down the front straight, so I led him there." Between the two of them, Camlin and Morehead ran down the fleeing Parker and Atherton, much to Atherton's surprise. "I thought Scott and I got away," A therton said. "I looked back a few times and I could see that we had a huge lead on those guys. Then, on the white-flag lap, there come Camlin and Morehead." Carr had also caught up, and after 25 grueling miles, as the five riders thundered off the final turn, it was still anybody's race. Camlin was third off the bend as he went to the wall, and when the pack spread out, it proved to be a good move; Camlin eeked out a small lead, but a clear one, and the Du Quoin Mile was his once again. "This feels great," C ~ said. "I want to give thanks to the good Lord. Without him I couldn't do this." And with that, it was all over but the shouting. But the shouting wasn't over. Carr said that he felt certain he'd done better than he'd been given credit for, as did Morehead. "I don't care whether it's one position or two," Carr said. "With as many races as I'm missing, the points matter that much more." In order to settle the matter, AMA referee Bruce Bober viewed a replay of the finish that was shot by Diamond P Sports for its upcoming telecasts of the Grand National Championship Series. Based upon what Bober saw, the results were changed. The net result was that Morehead was moved from fourth to second and Atherton from second to fourth. Parker and Carr's results were unchanged. '1 don't know why they didn't have a finish-line camera," Morehead said. "And that crap about theirs being broke just don't fly in professional racing." One thing that all the racers did agree on, however, was that Camlin clearly won the event, and that's all that mattered to the 25-year-old from' Rock Island, Illinois, who couldn't take all of the credit for the repeat win. '1 owe Steve Morehead for this one," Camlin said. Rest assured that Morehead will be looking to collect at the Lake Odessa Half Mile on July 8.
