··.vOICES·· . Lelteis tuttle !cIitoi America's weekly motorcycle newsp.aper .. .. Thanks, Kevin Thank you Kevin Schwantz for all the thrills and for displaying all your skills. I recall watching you and Wayne Rainey race on Superbikes early in your career. While leading your race with Rainey, who was 5-6 bike lengths behind, you rode past the limits of adhesion with both tires sliding out from under you. I was sitting on the outside of the comer and expecting the worst. My friend and the many spectators gasped in horror and started to stand up. Then you kicked down your right foot and brought your Suzuki back up on its tires, your right foot flying backwards. I recall you backing off the throttle every so slightly during your spectacular save, flicking the bike to the left for the next comer with enough composure to shut the door on Rainey as he attempted to pass on the inside. My jaw was still hanging open and you were gone. I knew I had just seen riding talent that I'd never seen before. That was just the start. You made a lot of fans that day and I was one of them. Thank you, Kevin. Good luck in all your endeavors. Louis Dalmau SanJose,CA Lima dust bowl I am very disappointed with the track preparation at the Lima race this year. I always thought the fans' consideration came first, but not at Lima. The dust was terrible in the ""F" Stands by the fourth turn. Some fans were using clothes over their mouth in order to breathe, and one fan said he was going out to his motorcycle to retrieve his riding goggles so that he could see. The track was sprinkled from time to time, but after dragging the turns it was just as dusty in a lap or two. I think when a person is charged $20 to view a race, he/she should be able to enjoy it. I drove over 1100 miles to see this race, but it was my last. From now on I will go to tracks that are prepared correctly and the fans are the primary consideration. LMohler Fairfax, VA Godspeed, Donald It is very hard to write this because I still haven't come to terms with Donald's passing. I first heard about this young kid in 1987 when I raced with him on Volume XXXII Sharon Oayton, President more than one occasion. Our paths didn't cross until some years later when we became teammates in 1993. For the next two-and-a-half years I saw Donald every race weekend and on occasion we trained on motocross bikes together. Since I have a deep belief in God, the only positive thing that could possibly come from his death is that he is in a better place. I will truly miss Donald and maybe we can all learn a lesson from his passing: don't take life too seriously because it can end in an instant, and it is real easy to lend a smile to someone who needs it - Donald always did. . My prayers are with Donald's fiancee Shannon and his mother. I wish there were more people like Donald in this world, people who are easy going and willing to lend a smile. Donald, I'm going to miss those ham sandwiches we shared when we were dirt biking together, and I'm going to miss you. . Your friend and teammate. Thomas Stevens Sanibel, FL Liking Swink I just wanted to share with everyone what a nice guy Brian Swink is. I had a bad crash early this season racing motocross in the 80cc A 12-15 class. My injuries were very serious and from a good friend of ours Brian received a letter about me. Like any other 15-year-old who races, you one day think about being a professional racer and look up to the guys who are. Brian has always taken the time to talk with me when he's practicing and at the Pro races. One morning he called me at home and I was so excited I didn't know what to say first. I should have said that my crash wasn't baby s'&% like he. said his was in the Pontiac SX, but I couldn't think fast enough. Then a couple of days later he sent me a jersey in the mail. I love it and I love bragging to my friends about it. . Brian, if you read this I want to say thanks and tell you that you're awesome and the can-ean rules. Shane Carlton Owosso,MI Stump thanks Dirt track fans are the greatest. We would like to say a special thanks to all of you for your support and help for Scott Stump. Scott was involved in an accident at the Springfield Mile in which he suffered a compound fracture of the right femur, a broken pelvis, a broken right wrist and six broken vertebra in his back. He is currently wearing a halo for the back and neck injuries, but considering everything he is doing well. We are in the process of putting together a raffle to raise money to help his wife and child make it through the long rehabilitation period. We would hope for everyone's support in this effort. We want to thank Steve Morehead and the rest of the riders for their efforts at the Dayton, Ohio, race. Your help is greatly appreciated. Scott has taken a few steps in his recovery and has been transferred into the rehab center to help further his recovery. We welcome any and all of you to call or stop by. As we all know, keeping up one's spirit will greatly enhance their recovery. Thanks for your support. I applaud the !lctions of the men who had enough "intestinal fortitude" to walk away from a dangerous situation. This is a sport, not a war. Too bad Mike LaRocco was out injured. I'm sure he would have been happy to agree to walk out with the rest of the men and then cowardly sneak back to the starting line with the other losers.
