machines on the old hand-shift bike.
Eddie Dodge once led all but the final
lap of a IS-lap Open class race at Corona
on the antiquated Indian, and he would
show his skill and the machine's amazing turn speed at Ventura. Andy and
Darryl Dodge also race vintage dirt
trackers, and for the Ventura event they
coerced 1983 AMA Grand National
Championship Rookie of the Year Pete
Hames to ride Darryl Dodge's 1969
HarLey-Davidson KR750 side-valve twin
in the Class C Footshift class.
Vic Cohen took the wins in both vintage Sidecar heats and the final easily since there were no other entries.
Unconcerned about the lack of competition, Cohen and passenger gave a great
display of classic sidecar dirt sliding.
Also on hand, and much wilder,
were four New Zealand - type sidecars,
with left-hand side wheels. Powered by
lOoocc four-cylinder engines, the outfits
ran clockwise, in the opposite direction
to the normal left-turn directions of
every other race of the evening, and
before the start of the main and each
heat race, the infield was cleared of photographers because the wickedly fast
outfits can steer in almost any direction
at full race speed - and they frequently
do. The Yamaha FZR1000-powered rig
ridden by Peter Lewis and passengered
by Jamie Macy took both heat wins and
ended upon top in the. final sideca r
melee of the night, an impressive performance since the sidecars seemed to take
any unpredictable line they wanted
around the dirt oval and passing was
frequent in the heats and final.
CONCOURS
The number of concours bikes at
Ventura was slightly lower than years
past, but what the exhibit lacked in
quantity it sureLy made up in quality.
Collector Rusty Kay from the Los Angeles area exhibited an example of the first
Honda. Kay's restored Kumotsuru bicycle is powered by a 1948 Honda Cub
motor, a tiny two-stroke. that was the
start of Honda's venture into motorcycle
production. Less. than a decade later,
Honda was the Japanese market leader.
The show also included a pristine 1959
Honda 300 Dream, one of the few
imported into the US that year.
The unusual display of exhibits
included three nearly identical Honda
mini-trail minibikes. Made from 1968 to
the present, the toy-like motorcycles
were street legal for one year only, in
1969, and all three of the tiny two'
wheeLers wore 1969-style black and yellow Ca1ifornia plates. The license plates
themselves were nearly as big as the
bike's engines. Each of the models bore
one of the three colors available in 1%9Red, Candy Blue and Yellow.
American domestic makers were also
. well represented, with the HarleyDavidson and Indian show bikes also
joined by examples from Henderson,
Yale, and Crocker.
