Some of the most fierce competiDon
in the event came from the eventual
third-, fourth- and fifth-overall finishes.
KTM rider Jason Dahners swapped
overall positions from fourth to third
with Scott Mclaughlin from Day One to
Day Two. The pair of Team Washington
riders were within two seconds of one
another after Saturday and both won
their respective motocross tests.
"1 was riding behind David Garrahan
and was have trouble passing him,"
Mclaughlin said. "We bumped a couple
times but 1 couldn't get around him. It
was tough keeping up with him at times
because of all the water crossings. 1
sized him up for a couple of laps and
finally made a momentum pass on him.
1 think my terrain test today went pretty
decently, but we'll have to see." The
Honda rider's time in the motocross test
was second fastest behind Smith.
"1 had trouble getting started on the
motocross and ended up in third," Dahners said of his motocross heat win.
"(Rod) Goehring and (Eric) Mashbir
both fell in the same comer and 1 took
the lead and held on for the moto win. 1
know Scott and 1 were real close this
morning. Scott beat my moto mne but
we'll just have to see how it went on the
te ts today." Those two terrain tests
went exceptionally well for Dahners. He
bettered Mclaughlin by almost 30 seconds to end up solidly in' third overall
with McLaughlin in fourth 10 seconds
back.
Finishing fifth overall was Garrahan.
Even though the Team Green rider had
led his moto over Mclaughlin right up
to the last lap, the 1994 Junior Trophy
rider was still 10 seconds off Mclaughlin's overall two-day pace. "1 was really
surprised to find myself out front in that
moto," said Garrahan. "Especially with
Mclaughlin and (David) Lykke in there.
1 lined up on the inside for the start and
1 knew if I got the holeshot I'd have a
good chance of holding them off. 1 got
the holeshot, but eventually Scott outbraked me and took the lead. But that's
all part of racing." Dahners, Mclaughlin
and Garrahan all competed in the
Heavyweight Two-Stroke class.

XR's Only's Davide Trolli. The Italian
off-road ensation showed his muscle
by dominating all of his classmates in
the special tests. The XR600 rider, who
campaigned the entire Qualifier series in .
the heavyweight four-stroke class and
also won that class' National title, made
a good overall performance again,
"Right now I'm just real happy that I
won the big four-stroke class," said
Trolli. "After riding two-strokes in
enduro competition my whole life it was
challenging to step up to the heavier
bike and do so well here and also during the series."
Finishing second behind Trolli in his
class and 12th overall was ISDE veteran
John Nielsen.
In the Lightweight Four-Stroke division Cycle Gear's Pat Garrahan outlasted KTM Desert rider Jim Gray. Riding a
"stroked" 320cc KLX, Garrahan overwhy their club has .chosen 10 stop putting on
the event. 'Twenty-fIVe years ago this event
had a huge effect. All of the manufacturers
would -get behind the series and it helped promote the 5POrl. We felt that by putting on this
event we wElre doing our patriotic du.ty to help
choose America's best riders to ride the Six
Days. Now we're lucky to just get a couple of
nationally ranked riders to even show up."
Davide Trolll announced plans to add the
National Enduro Series to his racing schedule
next year if he can arrange an -extension of
his work visa. "Right 'now I!m working with my
lawyer to get another two-year extension 6n
my visa. Winning the big four-strOke serieS
should help in my efforts to remain 'i(l the
.United States for a ~oup!e more Years." .
Because pf the Italian Trolli's series win' this
year, no real American tieilVyweighi FourStroke LOI' rider made, any top.-10· finishes.
This has pro'mpte'd a recruiting effort by the

came a day-one second-place finish in
his class two seconds behind Gray to
win their division by 29 seconds. Mo t
of that lead came during the final moto
where Gray found himself the very last
rider of the line when he had trouble
starting his bike.
'1 must have kicked the bike 25 times
before it started. It was real frustrating,"
Gray related. Gray battled his way back
to third in that heat race before time ran
out. Garrahan said of his class win: "All
of my tests went real well here. 1 had a
pretty good weekend. 1 rode with my
brother Brian and we just had a blast."
Garrahan and Gray finished 14th and
16th overall, respectively.
