lead. Hometown hero David Barrett
started the race in sixth, and methodically moved past his rivals until he
took control of second on lap six. The
Hollywood stuntman was impressive
as he matched Healey's pace, but he
was unable to close the distance
between himself and the leader, In the
end, Barrett was four seconds behind
Healey, and four seconds ahead of
Smail, who again turned in a hair-raising charge through the pack after a
poor start.
"I know it's the cheesiest saying in
the world, but it hasn't sunk in that I
finished second," s'aid Barrett, whose
best ever finish at Mammoth prior to
this year's race was lOth. "I bought my
bikes two and a half weeks ago and
practiced my ass off. I only race once a
year, and to do this good is really
great."
Racing in the amateur divisions was
just as exciting. Another local rider, Pat
Foster, shined brightly as he nearly
swept the Intermediate classes, Only a
crash at the start of the 250cc Intermediate main prevented Foster from winning
every Intermedia te main, as he piloted
an ATI< to the Sound of Thunder win, a
Honda CRSOO to the Open Intermediate
win, and a Kawasaki KXl25 to the 125cc
Intermediate win. The FMF/Thor/QMark/Spy / Afam/Wiseco/Mammoth
Mountain Ski Area-sponsored rider
from Bishop was in a class of his own
throughout the weekend. Team Green's
Caleb Leath chased Foster home in the
12Scc class, while Husaberg's Cliff Cook
did the same in the SoT race. Lance
Johnson was the runner-up in the Open
Intermediate class.
Honda of Troy's Casey Lytle was the
clear cut winner of the 250cc Intermediate main, as he ran away from the field
aboard his Pit Pro/N-Style/Sinisalosponsored Honda. Lytle took control of
the lead early on and stretched it out
with each and every lap.. Gabe Bolivar
followed at a distance, and Brian
Sweaney was third.
Dee Wood beat out Women's
National Champion Kristy Shealey in
the Women's,Pro class. Wood pressured
Shealy early in moto one, but crashed in
the horseshoe and was forced to come
back through the pack for second.
Wood stayed up in moto two, and
despite a few challenges from Shealey,
was able to score the all-important second moto win. Jamie Pamintuan used
consistent 5-4 moto finishes to earn
third overall.
Montclair Yamaha's David Ramsey
spanked the field in the 12Scc Junior
main. After dicing with runner-up Oscar
Valdez early in the race, Ramsey wicked
it up and establisl)ed a commanding
lead. In the closing laps, Ramsey
enjoyed a huge lead over Valdez and
third-placed Joey Cirocco.
As expected, DG's Rex Staten continued to rule the Vet Pro class, and this
year, grabbed the win in the Senior class
as well. Staten swept both Vet Pro
motos for the win over Mike Shoemaker, who went 2-3. A flat tire kept Dave
Coupe from challenging Staten in the
first moto, but he made a serious bid for
the lead in moto two. Coupe's 3-2 netted
him third overall.
In the Senior final, Staten was challenged by Brent Wallingsford in the
opening laps, but eventually pulled
away for a convincing win. Dirt Rider's
Tom Webb teamed up with his brother,
Mike Webb, to secure third and fourth
places, respectively.
Brandon Morgan held off yet another
Webb - Jason Webb - for the win in the
Mini Junior main event. Christopher
Tocco was third.
