By Donn Maeda Photos by Kinney Jones 12 MAMMOTH LAKFS, CA, JUNE 22ยท25 Y Davis and Mike Healey took con, trol of the starring roles at the 28th Annual Mammoth Mountain MX, but a strong cast of supporting riders kept the action fast and furious at the world-famous High Sierra facility. Together, Davis and Healey swept the four premier Pro classes - Davis taking the 125 and 500cc wins, and Healey doing the honors in the 250cc and Sound of Thunder races. But that's not to say that the competition at this year's running of the popular event was thin Rusty Holland, Lance Smail, Michael Brandes, local hero David Barrett, and even two-time World MX Champion Donny Schmit kept things interesting all weekend long. Unusually late snowfall in the Sierra Nevada mountains had race officials in a panic as the event drew nearer. Though the course was cleared of snow, and warm temperatures in the days preceding the event thawed the entire pit area, many racers waited until the last minute to send in their entries. Still, the lure of competing on one of the bestliked courses in the country succeeded in filling the starting gates, and it was business as usual when the gate dropped on the first moto of the weekend. Because of the conflicting Southwick 125/250cc MX National, the nation's top pros were absent. Most on hand would argue, however, that the racing action was just as good without America's elite. The most consistent Pro of the weclcend was former 125 and 250cc World Championship Series contender Healey. The heavily tattooed rider show~ that he still has most - if not all - of the speed that carried him to second in the '91 250cc World Championship. Healey piloted Pro Circuit Hondas in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, and raced factory K1Ms in the Open and Sound of Thunder races. He won the SoT and 250cc races, and finished second in the 125 and 500cc events. Not a bad weekend contingencies excluded, Healey raked in a cool $4000. "I've always liked Mammoth," Healey said. '1 only own a 125 and 250, so I called KTM up to see about racing one of their bikes. I was originally only supposed to race a 360cc two-stroke, but when they unloaded Greg Zitterkopfs four-stroke and said that he was hurt, I figured, why not?" Davis could have - should have earned the "Top Pro" glory at Mammoth, but a severely blown motor in the second Sound of Thunder race cost him the class win and handed the overall honors to Healey. Kawasaki Team Green's most famous motocrosser-goneoff-roader was anxious to prove that he can still do the business on an MX track, and a t the end of the weekend, there was little doubt that Davis can still shred a berm. Despite dropping to 11 th overall in the SoT standings, Davis' wins in the 125 and Open classes, along with a sixth in the 250cc class, netted him $2650.
