back by him" explained Plessinger of his
gutsy decision to stop for goggles on the
white flag and allow Andrews back into
the lead. "He had roosted me coming
out of a mudhole and the mud ran
down underneath the Roll-Dffs on my
goggles. 1 knew it would be better to
lose a little time at that point than not to
be able to ~ on the last lap. 1 pushed
him real hard until he made a mistake."
"He was sticking with me in the tight
woods and I know he was just playing
with me," said Andrews of his last lap
fight with Plessinger. "He was just
watching me and waiting for a good
line. He was close but he was laying
back. 1 had lost all my water in that
crash and my body was dying on me at
the end, but 1felt thatl had come too far
to just let go now. 1 just kept pushing
but when we got to the last tight section
1 knew Scott was going to go somewhere. He was one step ahead of me
and he shot through some thicket and
passed me. That was all she wrote."
Cooper never quit charging but he
came up short by 20 seconds. Summers
finished four minutes back in fourth
with bad brakes and a leaking gas tank.
"I didn't do as well as I wanted to,"
is how Summers summ.ed up his day. "I
made some mistakes on the first lap and
broke my rear brake. We worked on it
after two laps and got it fixed so that 1
should have a chance to catch back up. I
think 1 was trying too hard because 1
was making mistakes. Every time 1 felt
like 1 was making up ground 1just lost it
again. But I finished fourth and got
some points towards the championship.
1 can already tell that every point is
going to count this time."
