Goyer went 3-1 for the ovet'llll win while Light finished third overall. (Below) Danny Ward was the Classic 250cc winner at the Buclds Creek Speedway dirt track. (Bottom) George Wills was unstoppable at the Cumberlllnd Speedway dirt track, winning both the Dinosaur and Classic 5OOf75Occ events on his HarleyDavidson handshltter. taco, allowing Breckon an uncontested win on his BSA B50. Richtmeyer and his BSA blew to the front of the Modern Vintage 750· pack when the green flag waved, chased by Arnie Mahnke's Norton. While most riders were sticking with a low line, Richtmeyer went higher and had to fight the bike through the turns, especially turn three. This allowed Mahnke . to close up each time underneath Richtmeyer. But then the BSA rider began to pull away, and the race for second through sixth positions heated up, with Bill Blackwood grabbing and hanging onto the number-two slot. It was John Blackstock in third by a narrow margin over Mahnke, followed by Joe Gately and John Skinner. On the longer Cumberland oval George Wills has dominated the AHRMA Dinosaur class this season, but Leo Anthony Jr. made Wills work for the win. Leo Jovanovic brought his Harley home third, making it a sweep for the handshifters. . In brakeless Oassic sao /75Occ action, Rusty Lowry was off quick on his KR Harley and soon opened an insurmountable gap over the tussle involving Wills, Craig Breckon (BSA) and Jovanovic. Triumph thumper riders Danny Ward and Ed Marshall had a good dice in the Classic 250cc heat race, out it was all Ward in the final. Modem Vintage 250 featured a tight race for the top four positions involving John Plumb (Yam), George Richtmeyer (Yam), Donnie Warf (Ossa) and Keith Bryant. Despite pressure from Richtmeyer, Plumb got to the checkered flag first. The Modern Vintage 600 race looked like Tom Morgan's, until the compression release blew out of his Bul- under a hot sun, the Dinosaur race was again a battle early on between Wills ~d Anthony. Riding the same machine on which his father won three AMA Nationals decades ago, Anthony says his goal for the season is to beat Wills just once. But it wouldn't be this weekend, as the number-one plate holder showed some serious speed and gradually pulled away. The Classic sao /75Occ race also started out with Lowry leading Wills, but quickly the old handshifter was out front, never to be challenged. In the Classic 250cc class, the race was all Ward's. In the Modem Vintage classes, Warf worked his Ossa DMR into the lead and just held off Bryant for the remainder of the race. The 600cc race saw Morgan with an easy win over Breckon, who was forced to reattach the brake on his dinosaur Matchless after his BSA gave up the ghost. Ran· 0 fime By Matt Benson BUDDS CREEK, MD, JUNE 10 CUMBERLAND, MD, JUNE 11 n another of AHRMA's multiNational weekends, motocrossers got the opportunity to challenge the bigtime circuit at Budds Creek MX Park, while dirt trackers were treated to a doubleheader - under the lights at Budds Creek's Potomac Speedway, followed by an afternoon race 200 miles away at Cumberland Speedway. The hilly Budds Creek MX track was in perfect condition, but the myriad jumps proved too much for many old motorcycles. Several riders had wheels collapse, while a few others lost seats or exhaust pipes, and a trailer-equipped tractor was kept busy hauling usually reliable bikes up the hill to the pits. David Goyer of Syracuse, New York, was one who found Budds Creek to his liking. The Maico 400 rider used 2-1 finishes to win the competitive Sportsman 500cc and 30+ Intermediate classes. The BSA-mounted Quebec contingent of Steve Tucker, David Tucker and Marc Comut also had a good day, collecting a van-full of trophies in a variety of classes. On the oval track, George Wills and his Harley-Davidson WR handshifter continued their domination of the Dinosaur and Classic. 500 OHV / 750 Sidevalve classes. The Illinois rider did, however, meet his match in the Classic 500/750 class at Budds Creek, when a determined Rusty Lowry powered his KR Harley away from Wills and the rest of the pack. . The Budds Creek and Cumberland Classic Bike dirt tracks were the first two rounds of the three-event $1000 East Coast Handshift Challenge. With his two Dinosaur wins in Maryland, Wills looks to have a lock on the $300 top prize going into the final during the July 29-30 Days of Glory in Weedsport, New York. The first Sportsman sao Intermediate moto saw Edward Jones and his TM400 Suzuki run away, leaving behind a good I 42 scrap between Goyer, Raymond Weir (CZ) and Joe Adomaitis (Mai). In moto two it was Goyer's turn to run off as Jones carded a DNF. Again, the real race was behind the leader, this time with David Tucker and his '69 BSA 441 hounding Weir in a battle over second. Just as it looked as if Tucker would ha ve to settle for third, Weir's 74 CZ 400 began to burble on the steep climb to the checkered flag, and the Canadian swept past. Weir's 3-3 finishes earned him second for the day over Tucker's 8-2 score for third overall. Goyer and Paul Dziwanowski (Hon) traded wins in 30+ Intermediate, with Goyer earning the overall by virtue of his win in moto two. At the front of the race, among the Experts, North Carolina rider Dean Sarver took his CR250 Honda to a pair of moto wins over Yamaha-mounted Richard Shipman. The pair also finished in that order in the Sportsman 250cc Expert class. Darin Emswiler got his Honda across the line first in both Sportsman 125ec Expert races, chased each time by Doug Wentzell (Hon). The class was quite unkind to Tim Weaver, who stalled his Bultaco on the line in moto one and put in a brilliant ride to finish just short of Wentzell, only to destroy his rear wheel while running second or third in the second moto. Intermediate action featured a close race for the lead in the second moto between Bill Nazelrod and James Smith. Nazelrod finished 2-1 to Smith's 3-2. Weaver had better luck on his 360 Bultaco in the Sportsman 500cc Expert class, finishing second to Rick Hudson after a toug'h chase in the first moto, then winning moto two over Wentzell's YZ360 Yamaha. Although raindrops during the first heat races provided a few minutes' worry during the Baltimore County Trail Riders-promoted Budds Creek dirt track, the rest of the program went off without a hitch. Trophies were provided by Boston's Motorcycle Cafe in Port Royal, Virginia.
