to Robert Dunlop in last year's event at Ballaugh Bridge when his RC45's rear wheel disintegrated, a reoccurrence was unthinkable. McCallen also encountered problems on the first two laps with visibility, which he readily admitted were probably of his own making. "With hindsight, at my first pit stop I realized that I had probably been sitting up too much anc;l I was picking up loads of flies on my visor," he said. "It was really bad toward the end of the second lap and I lost loads of time." He had indeed lost time. A 12-second lead at the second splil-timing point at Ramsey (22 miles) totally evaporated over the Mountain and at the first pit stop Dunlop had actually snatched back the lead. However, a broken ventilation system on Dunlop's bike was affecting the power of his RC45, and a lQ-secondlonger pit stop by Dunlop's crew as they tried in vain to cure the proplem gave the lead back to McCallen, who ended up winning by 18 seconds. Over the public address system, Dunlop stated that he was happy with second place, but his facial expressions belied his annoyance that a recordbreaking 18th IT win would have to be put on hold. Englishman Simon Beck ended up-an elated third, while Jefferies and Steve Ward brought the remaining Castrol Hondas home in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The expected Ducati challenge did not materialize, Beck's effort on the 888 not included. Scotsman lain Duffus was in a confident mood before the race after setting the second-quickest qualifying time, but his Ducati 916 overheated on the first lap. New Zealander Robert Holden had a battery fail on his 916 on the second lap and Michael Rutter, also 916-mounted, retired early with a broken fuel pump. "Even when he started to pull away again on the road I knew I had it in hand. I was picking off markers and counting down in my head so I knew I was still well in command, and I felt I had a little something in reserve. Not too much, though. Phillip was going really hard, and I certainly didn't want to go at his pace. To be honest with you, he was going bananas, and I wasn't sur-. prised when he crashed and lost it in a big way. I hope he's all right." Jefferies ended up second after being sixth at the end of the first lap.
