Ailer riding twi ce as hard as the other A riders , Don Connelly had to settl e for second overall to Dan ny Walsh, who was able to run awa y with both events. In the first moto, Connelly was T-boned on th e start and had to work through th e field of eight. In the second moto, Connelly d ropped the Suzuki while cha llengin g Walsh and again had to wo rk his way back through the . pack before finishing second. Steve Laninovich remained consistent to earn third overall. A total of 17 riders lined up in the B class. Frank Ru ff managed to holeshot and win the first moto. Scott Richeson took the second moto an d overall wi n, placing second to Ruff in the firs t mo to. John Hopkins earned his Mini Stock Novice tro p hy wi th a wire-to-wire moto win but had to retake the lead from Billy Laninovich in the second moto, Laninovich had a 2-2 day for second overall . Jeff Robinson holeshot both the 125cc Beginner motes, but David Fox ma nag ed to sneak by for the overall . Bran don Vielguth got by also to earn seco nd for the day. JUNE 9 Bobby Hed den came away wi th his second dou ble of the season by scoring wins in the Fast Friday s Handicap a nd Scra tch main events for the seco nd week in a ro w at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. In th e Handicap fea ture, Hedden came off the 50 yard line like a shot, and he moved into third place behind Van ce Fe licio a nd Darrell Busby before the end of lap one. In a tigh t gro up behind the lead ers were Bart Bast , Jimmy Sisemore and Bobby Hicks . The second three were so close togeth er you could ha ve covered them with a blanket as they diced for fourth p lace. Coming out of the fourth corner, Felicia fa iled to get a good drive. Busb y went on the ou tsid e and Hedden went und erneath for th e pa ss. Busby continued to lead for two more laps . Even though Hedden could pull up' beside him in th e straights Bu sby dove in to th e corners harder to maintain the lead. On the back straig ht Hedden got up beside Busby again and finally powered past him in the last corne r for the win . All the rid ers 'crossed the finish line in a tight group with Busby second and Bast third. Coming out of ga te two in the Scratch main event Hedden immediatel y took the lead in the fir st co rne r w hi le Bast an d Du s tin Schroeder bumped, se nd ing Bast way wid e. Hedden led the wh ol e race . Th e rea l race wa s for second place as Hicks and Schroeder ran side by side for the entire race. As the flag wav ed for the finish it was Hedden with his seco nd win of the evening followed by Hicks in second and Schroeder in third. Templeton tops Lake Sugar Tree Mo~ocross Opener By Jay and Sharo n Hauser AXTON, VA. jUNE4 Sha ne Templeton came to Lake Sugar Tree wi th hopes of a strong ride after a two-mon th layoff due to a broken foot. Tem pleton's hopes pa nned out a nd he took the overall victory in the premier 250 A class via a stro ng pair of ru nn er-up fmishes on a course that was in perfect condition. Though it was th e facility's season-opening race for 1995, the event served as the last round of the successful Ll.S. Eastern Pro-Am Motocross Spring Series . On hand to secure his overall seri es win of the 250 A cIass was Rob Mcwhorter. McWhorter took th e h oleshot on hi s b ig CRSOO in the fITSt round of 250 A action, with Chris Anstead slipping his Honda into second. Templeton and Vann Gibso n were quick to dis , place An stead and were hot on McWhorter within two turns of the start . leaving Anstead to fight off Mike Eastwood and Scott Shipley for fifth. At the halfwa y point M cWhorte r wa s perched out front with a comfortable 12-second lead . Templeton was on cruise control in seco nd , while Ea stwood and Shipley w orked into a hea lthy ballle ove r third place. The Eas twood /Shipley battle ca rri ed th e pair right up to Templeton, and he found him · self in a heated late-moto ballle. McWhorter cruised past the checkers for the win while Eastwood and Shipley bo th encounte red a quick slip-up in t he la te stages that allowed Temple to n to ho ld down the second spo t. Sh ip ley .took advantage of Eastwood ' s slide in the ha irp in to car d third . William Finch was fifth . In t h e second moto McWhorter aga in nabbed the holeshot and led the first two laps . Eastwood. gated a strong second a nd never let McWhorter get too far away. so when McWhorter bobbled, Eastwood went by for the lead and took Templeton with him . Once out front, Eastwood styled his way to the checkers well ahead of Tem pleton, who was a gain engaged in a late race battle to keep McWhorter back in thi rd . Templeton took the runner-up spot which was good enough to capture th e overall. McWhorter"s third netted him second on the day over Eastwood's 4-1 score. Perotio pounds 'em at Adelanto Motocross Oakley / Arai / Acerbis /MXA-backed Perolio leapt off the line in the fir st mote ahead o f Travis Preston and Tr acey Asher. Perotio instantly carne under pressure from Preston but was ab le to keep his advantage. taking the moto win. Moto two ended up being an exact copy of moto one, with Perolio takin g the win ah ead of Preston and Asher. In the Saturday night IT ev ent, Perolio's main competition came from Casey Johnson. In the first heat, Jo h n so n mana g ed to squ eeze around Peroio on th e sixth circui t and was able to hold him off to tak e th e win. In the second heat. Johnson was able to get the jump a t the drop of the flag and run way with the overall IT win, while Peroli o played it conservatively. finishing first in the Pro program. A t the drop o f the g ate in the fir s t P ro m ot ocross, the pros bl as ted off the lin e with FMF's Michael Brandes ta ki ng the holeshot. Brandes quicky pulled out to an early lead . and took the first-moto victory with Perolio finishing second . Mo to two sa w Brandes again nab the holeshot with Perolio in tow . Brandes gave PemIio the s li p e a r ly in th e moto, but Perolio doggedly caught up to Brand es three laps from the end . Bra ndes defended his po sition, never allowing Perolio to ga in a wheel's advantage.
