The 23-year-old Califor nia n, once kn own as a n indoors-only guy for his supernatura l supe rcross abili ties, has begun to stake his claim for ou tdoor do mination as well . McGra th wo n his second 250cc Nati onal, this time getting the job do ne at Bud ds Creek Raceway. The win kept McGrath out front in his bid to add the AM A 250cc Na tio na l Ch a mp ionship crown to th e five sta d iu m ti tles he already owns. "Strong, man. I'm ge tting strong!" said a hap py McGrath after winni ng the second moto. "I've really been focusing on my conditioning this year so tha t I wo uld be read y to go ha rd ou tdoors, too. On a hot da y like this it really pays off." McGrath lost the first moto to a su rprisingly fast and stro ng Mike laRocco, w ho was makin g his firs t competitive appearan ce since breaki ng his arm two months ago. LaRocco d efeat ed a racelon g attack fro m McGra th an d Doug Henry before tak ing the checkered flag first. In th e seco nd moto McGrath followed long-time rival Jeff Emig for half the race before making his move. Lak occo ran fourth in the moto for an imp ressive second overall, while Suzuki's Greg Alberty n put in his best showing since the seaso n-opener for a solid third overall.
