.R ADR C O AE . .'.A National Championship Road Race series · MA Round 6: New Hampshire International Speedway The Le M ans-style start gets underway for the SuperTea ms race at New Hampshire International Raceway; Dutchman Racing (3) gets the jump on Erion Racing (1). 12 was a close one with Merkel, Katzenb erg e r and Kipp fig h ting their way around in close com pa ny . The story in this one, tho ugh, was the one which involved Ya tes . The Team Su zu ki Sport racer ·w a s a rg ua b ly th e qu ickest on th e race track. He moved in to fourth p lace on th e third lap and started to close on the top thr ee. O n the n inth la p , the Georgia n cras he d th e Suzuki in turn thr ee. " I locked u p th e fr ont brake a n d tucked the front," Yates exp lained late r. "1 think 1 hit a bump or something. Anyw ay, th e cornerwork er had turned the · key off. 1 think 1 was 10th w hen I go t go ing aga in an d I jus t wanted to catch back up." And ca tch up he did. At the end of the 10th lap he was 10th; after 13 laps he was ninth; by the 19th lap he was up to fifth; and a lap later he was fourth. At th at p oin t he could see Ka tz enberger, and that proved to be his u nd oing. He crashed again in one of the final corners, but remou nted to finis h eighth . A wild day, indeed. " I wan te d to be on th e podi u m," Yates said. "1 was catching 'em, catching 'em . He (Ka tzenberger) was only on a 600. 1 knew I cou ld throw it up underneath . 1 tried to ge t ther e, but I d idn't m ake it . The shifter and everything b roke, but I managed to get it in first gear and cruised to the finish line." Meanwhile, Me rkel and Kipp were well clear. An d with Yat es crashing, Kat zenberger wa s free to finish th ird, tho ugh he wa s later fined by the AMA for running a smaller-than-stock battery on his 600. McDaniel and Leslie battled to the finish line wit h McDani el getting the nod after bot h had made easy work of Jacks, wh o ended up sixth. Notable crashers included (in order of d eparture): Eric Gulbransen, Scot t Morris, Marc Smith, Anthony Lupo, Gerald Rothman Jr . (the victim of his exhaust sy s tem falling und er his rear wheel), Yates and Yates again, and Jim Lester. "It was a good race for me," Kipp s aid . "1 di dn't w in , but I s till ga in ed points in the championship and the title is th e importa nt thing to u s . Th is is Yamaha's first year for a serious look at the 750cc Supersport class, so each track we go to is b asi cally new for us. We wo rk all weekend and the n by race time, w e seem to ge t everything just abou t right." For Katzenberger, his thir d-place finish w as an all-time hi gh at an AMA N a tional : "This is g reat," he said . "I hop ed for a top 10 finish and ended up third wit h a tri p to victory lane. This is my bes t finish in a National. 1 do a lot of club racing here at Loudon, bu t 1 don't think my track kn owled ge helped a lot. 1 just tried to keep it steady on th e ga s and kee p a rh ythm going . 1 knew somebod y was back the re on the last lap, but I didn't know who. I just didn't wa nt to get passed on the last lap. I wa s really looki ng for the white flag. It seemed like the race ju s t kept going and going . I thou ght it was 20 laps . I've got to read the sched ule closer next time." I':\' New Hamsphire International Speedway Loudon, NewHampsh ire Results: June 18, 1995 7SOc S UPE RS PO RT: 1. Fred Mer kel (Suz); 2. But what Barnes failed to point ou t was that the team which so dominantly wo n the sixth rou nd of the series - Cycle Motion Racing - also moved to within striking di stance in th e cha m pions hip, as only 11 points now separate the top three in the championship. This d ay sim p ly belonged to Cycle M otion Ra cing , w ith its Suz u ki GSXR1100 rid d en brilliantly by Mark McDaniel and Aa ro n Yates.
