Joel Smets (Hbg) wo n the French round of th e Wor ld Ch ampi o n ship 500cc Moto cros s Serie s, held in S1. Jean D' An gely, France, on June 18. The big Belgian used 4-1 moto finish es to earn h is win . A merican Trampas Parker (KTM) was second overall , and Belgian Gerald Delepine (Ho n) was th ird. Smets leads Par ker, 191-185, in the series po int stand ings . Paul Pinsonna ult (Hon) topped th e 540cc class at the Ho rn ell M.e. Nati onal Hillclimb, held June 18 in Avoca, New York. Scott McNeeley (Hon) was second, and Rick Soter III (BSA) wa s third. Jimmy D ingee (H -D) aced the 800cc d iv isi on, bea ting o u t Greg Williams (Hon) and Steve Dresser (H-D). Six-time World Champion Jordi Tarres (G-G) was the runner-up, while To mmi Ahvala (Fan), Joan Pons (G-G) and Doug Lampkin (Bet) rounded ou t the top five. Remember David Cobos, the 15-yearold Spaniard who topped America' s best trials riders at the April 30 EI Trial de Espana? Now 16, the personab le teen made his World Round d ebut in Spain and finished an impressive 10th . Cobos was originally sched uled to ma ke his debut at the previous round in Italy, but wa s sidelined wit h an injury and a lack of a driver's license. Say what? In order to compete in a World Championship event , rid ers must be licensed drivers in their ho me country. Apparently, Cobos fai led t he driver's t est in hi s fi rs t attempt. Shane Tri ttler reports that starting July 6, the Lake Casta ic MX Park will be open for practice on Thurday evenings, brin ging the tota l number of open practice sess ions per week to thr ee. Th e AMA reports th at legisl at ion has been app roved in Maryland, Pennsylvania and N ew York that will raise maxim um rural int ersta te speed limits to 65 m ph. In Maryland, approximately 270 miles of interstate highway will benef it, and in Pe nnsylv ania, 1600 miles will be affected . New York wi ll allow a 65-m p h sp eed limit on 1100 miles o f highway. There are now only five states remaining which have not passed similar measu re s: Connecticut, Del a ware, Hawaii, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Americans Greg Ha ncock and Sam Ermolenko also pla ced well, wit h Hancock scoring a third place in the B Final to move in to eighth place in the series, while Ermol enko won the C Final to remain in fifth p lace overall. John Hipkiss 1996 AMA Schedules announced he AMA has accelerated its planning process for 1996, and has released its schedule of events for the upcoming Superbike, 125/250cc Nationa l MX and Gra nd National Cha mpions hip Series. "O u r field managers have put an incredible amount of work in to the scheduling process, and we're excited about releasing this information early in 1995," said Tom Mu eller, executive di rector of AMA Pro Racing. "We've been wo rking hard to communicate wit h our sponsors, OEMs, tea m owne rs and racing customers, and one prominent request is for an earlier release of sched ules. We' re happy to meet that request for 1996." Scheduling for the AMA -sanctio ned U .S.
