ab le to wo rk his way back into the lead an d take a narrow victory. Joe Kopp's lit tle brother, Lonnie Kopp, grabbed the holeshot in the third heat and held off Hill for two laps. Once Hill blas ted by, he pulled a full-s tra ightaway lead over Dale Jenneman , w ho took second on lap four. Lon nie Kopp h eld off J.P. Simonsen, but both were semi bound. The last heat also got off to a rocky start as Don i H o leman a n d Pa u l Berg strom t an gl ed .i n turn o n e . Bergstrom was .able to make the restart, but H ol ema n was d o n e fo r th e d a y . When heat fou r d id ge t u n der-way it was a great race as Dan Stanley broke on top ove r Kenton Longcor, Mick ey Fay and Ty Howard. Stanley appeared to be pulling away until Fay caught him. On lap four, Longcor and Howard made it a four-rider battle. On lap seven, Howard took over. "Man I was motocrossin'," said the excited Howard. "I caught a berm down there on the inside of turn four and just gassed it by them." Fay worked his wa y aro und Stanley for the last transfer. SEMIS Washington's J.P. Simonse;' led the first semi .until turn one of the last lap when L&L Racing's Longcor slammed by. Team Saddlemen /F1anders-backed Lance Jones was a distant third on his factory-backed J&M Racing KTM, gaining the last transfer to the National. Bret Beyer led semi two in to heat one. But TCR's Atherton - his electrical problems apparently cured - led at th e end of lap on e. "We ch an ged everything with the electrics, that must have been it," said Atherton after running 'away with th e win. Steve Beattie moved to a solid second while Beyer, Troudt, John Hlebo, Eli Price and Lonnie Kopp battled for the last ticket to the main . Eventually it b oiled down to a war between Hlebo and Troudt, both of whom had fallen earlier. Hlebo thwarted Troud t's best cha llenges and sent Troudt to his van for the day. Stanley led Randy Deeke and Steve Mayfield at the start of the last semi. Stanley kept his B.B.R.P./Budweiserbacked Rotax narrowly in front of Mayfield while Joey Duvall, Jeff Annen and Philip Lash clashed over third. On lap five, La sh got a drive by both Duvall and Annen pushing h is Topeka H-Dbacked KTM into his first National. NATIONAL "I' d like to just ge t a good start and put them away, just like the heat," sai d Parker of his race plan for the National. But Kopp was quickest off the line with Parker and King in tow. It took tw o laps for Parker to squeeze by, then set his own pace. "After 1 got the lead 1 was just fighting the track," Parker said. "The jump was really tough. It was so soft the ruts would just push you one way then the other. You were a t the mercy of the bumps." Joe Kopp stayed close the whole race . "I could see him hit that jump sideways a few times," Kopp said . "I was hoping 1 wouldn't clear the jump and see hi m laying there, but every time he was in tha t left-ba nder, and 1 had to just keep chasing. He just didn 't make enough mistakes." Atherton joined King and Hill in the battle over third. Hill took over on la p six with a ll three staying close until King stubbed his toe in turn one. Hill pulled away as Atherton took over fourth. Tresser se ttled in to sixth place. "I felt good about where [ was ru nnin g, bu t 1 was so re from that get-off las t night ," Tresser said . "I did n't feel like 1 could pus h it too ha rd, but [ think 1 could have moved up." Then sud denly, Tr esser's race was over. '1 broke a half-link," lamented Tresser afterward . "I can't believe it. 1 d on' t think I've ever broken a chain before." (Left) Tight 600 NATIONAL (17 riders; 15 laps): I. Sco tt Parker (H -D); 2. Joe Kopp (W-R); 3. Aar on Hill (H-D); 4. " It reall y hurt, but 1 wa s going to try and putt around ," Atherton said . "While 1 was trying to get it together I s ta ll ed the b ike on the jump and couldn't get restarted." By lap 16 Parker was coming up on lapped traffic, allowing Kopp and Hill to close. Parker's lead was in jeopardy for only a short time as he pulled away again. Kopp closed down again on lap 24, but jus t couldn't mount a strong challenge. Hill slipped off the pace as well, and for most everyoneit was a matter of just trying to survive to th e end.
