As the 750 experts rolled to the line for their championship final the big quest ion was whether Scott Buch an co u ld tran slat e h is heat- race wi n int o a win over Beattie and Evans, who had run 1-2 in thei r qualifier . Buchan 's lap times in his heat race win ind icated he was circulating as. fast as Beattie and the reigning cha mp Evans, but in th e final Buchan cou ld only mana ge a third p lace as the battle fo r first drew the lead ers away. On the fou rth lap Beattie uncorked a lightning lap that mad e it look like he had been toying with Evans and pulled awa y for the win. All three riders were pleased with the results and obviously th ink ing of po ints after this first of five champions hip races. Building up huge leads , Linkogle left Japanese racer Taka teru Atsuta, who eve n tuall y finished a distant secon d during bo th outings. Rid ing a 125cc m achine, Ped ro Gonza lez, who su ffered head injuries earlier in the season finis hed in third.
