The a m a teu r event, which attracted best motocrossers and h are scram blers (and seven d u alsporters) to the southwestern comer of Pennsylvania, wa s held on the eve of the 19th annua l High Point 125/250cc Pro Motocross Nati on als. Among the field at the Racer Productions-promoted eve nt where practica lly every p romin en t amateur p ilot in the Eastern U.S. Multi-tim e amateur champion Ricky Ca rmichael ma d e the drive no rth from his Florida home to com pete in the mini cycle divisions . Th e 14-year-old Carmichael won all four of his motos on Saturday at High Point. In t he 85 cc 0 4- 15) class th e Kawasaki pilot pulled away fro m longtime sou t he rn rival Sha e Be ntle y t o record the overall, while Suzuki-mounted Mik e Barto ran 4-5 in two motos for thi rd ove rall. Carmichael then climbed aboard his big wheel SOcc Kawasaki to ma tch u p wi th 125cc amateur champion Nicholas Wey in th e Schoolb oy cla ss. Carmichael prove d his ve rsati lity b y running down Wey in the second mota on th e bi g g er b ike to claim anot h er ove ra ll vict ory; Wey was seco nd both t im e s au t while Ben tley kep t b ot h cha m ps hon est while holding third all d ay long. Matt Wa lk e r a n d Tra v is Pa strana each scored mini-class wins befor e facing off in the Super Mini class. Walker' s win ca me in th e 33-r id er 85 cc U -13 class, wher e he won both motos against local favorite Branden Jesseman and Jeff Gibson. Pastrana, from the neighboring state of Maryland, rode away with both 29-bike 85cc 7-11 minicycle mot a wins. H e was trailed by Ben Riddle and Josh Summey in the ove rall tally. The Walk er -Pastrana d u el for Super Mini suprem acy ended wi th Pastrana on top by technical knockout. After d efeatin g the Kawasaki 'rid er in the first heat, Pastrana was left to rid e alone out front wh en Wal ker had so me problems in the early goi ng of the race an d was relegated to 23rd in the mota . That left seco nd ove ra ll honors in this class to Gibson, while KX SO-mou nted Jeffrey Ryan was thi rd. In the littl e kids' classes, Gene Stull , another res pected local gr ommet, won bo th mo tos in the 65cc 00-11 ) class with fellow Ka w asaki rider Gavin Gracy k second and young Mike Sigmund third . In the even yo u nger 65cc (7-9) group, Jimmy Ch appel ou t-pointed firs t mota winn er Bradl ey Ripple a n d visiti ng Floridian Jam es Stewart, who won the seco nd mota after settling for seventh in the first race. Th e top 50cc (7-9) rid er at Hi gh Point was Co bra -m ounted Chris Lazzare tto , w ho finis hed 14th in last yea r's Amateur N at ionals, bu t look s like a real threat th is time ar ou nd. Lazzaretto split mota wi ns with another highly-regarded Pee Wee pil ot, KTM-mounted Bro c Hepler , but w on the overall by virtue of his better seco nd race performance. The Cobra of David Millsap occu pied third overall a t th e end of th e day. KTM rider Trey MOTOCROSS '1995T eamGreenSpringNationals Thompson had the best score in the 50cc (4-6) class, finis hin g first and seco nd in h is two m o to s for the w in a head of Yamaha-m ounte d Adam Drabek a nd up-and-coming West Virginian Jo sh Stanl ey. The top girl at High Point w as rising amateur star Amber Hughes, who blasted around the Hig h Point track with the speed and sty le of any top Int ermediate rid e r .
