MOTOCROSS· Thurston County ORV Park ·VINTAGEAi1nualDino Daze Vintage MX . . 11th Yamaha YZ250 pilot Nyblod won heat two. The third and final heat race saw local Rich Sipp joining the win club, The qualifying in the 40+ class was also exceptional. Grant fended off Californian Ron Melton, who also rode a Bultaco, for a heat one win. Rapp won heat two , but it was a hard-fought victory over Butch Cochran. To save time, many classes ran qualifiers combined, such was the case in the Open Twin and 250cc lightweight classes . Norton ri der Bill Knight and Cochran battled for the number one spot in the Open Twin class, which went Cochran's way, while Erik Giertsen, Robert Borg and local BSA rider Jack Callinsky fought over the 250cc lightweight win, which went to Callinsky. Ron Pomeroy, riding a Bultaco, won one of two Open Two-Stroke heats. Rapp won the other heat. The rider of the day was Nyblod who posted three class wins, taking home the gold in the 125, 250 and 30+ A divisions. But perhaps the biggest winner of the day was the host Tacoma Motorcycle Dub that saw the largest turnout of riders in the event's ll-year history. Well over 200 riders from numerous States, as well as neighboring Canada, crashed the gates resulting in a full day's program. "We may have to go to a preen try type of thing for next year to limit entries," said club member Bob Lindsay. "The ra ce ha s continued to grow and grow each year and keep s getting more successful." The Dino Daze event isn't strictly abou t racing. The weekend's program sta rted off with a swap meet and bike show, co n ti nuing its ca rn iv al atmosphere which draws spectators in large numbers. Qualifying kicked off the racing activities, as many classes had over 50 entries, as was the case in the 30+ class. Three heats of 30+ competitors battled for positions in which the top four would go directly to an elite A main, similar to a flat track program. Husqvarna-mounted Dirk Murphy won the first heat, while U ' (Above) Yamaha rider Dallas Nybold was one of the big winners at the 11th Annual Dina Daze Vintage MX In Washington. First up was the 30+ B main, where Ducati rider Larry Saxton picked up a win over Bill Knight. In the 30+ A main, Nyblod cruised to an easy win. The Yamaha rider held a huge lead to the finish where he beat Sipp and Dirk Murphy. Rapp and Grant sat side by side in row one of the 40+ A final. Grant emerged the leader as the pack entered turn one and was never headed. Yamaha rider Terry Hyde did a great job of holding down second, that was until Rapp pushed through traffic after overcoming a dismal start. After Rapp overtook Ossa-mounted Melton and Maico rider Dale Hodson, he set his sights on Grant and closed the gap a t a breathtaking pace. Grant, though, refused to budge an d held Rapp at bay. Rapp finishe d second ahead of Melton, Hyde, Hodson and Jim Keeton, who rode an ex-factory CZ. Milton came right back by lead ing the Open A final . Rapp, though, was right on his heels out of turn one. Pomeroy, Greg Blazek and Tony McFarlane were in hot pursuit. After following Melton for several laps, Rapp found a way around and maintained a lead to the finish. For Pomeroy, though, it wasn't a memorable day as he .lost a footpeg and finished fourth behind Rapp . . Perhaps the day's best battle took place in the 250cc A main between Yamaha riders Nyblod and former National MXer Mike Larson. Nyblod had Grant hot on his heels off the start, but Grant missed a shift and quickly dropped fr om second to sixth. Grant came from sixth to fou r t h , while Larson, who rode a stock 1974 Yamaha MX250, closed the gap on Nyb lod, Once larson caught up to Nyblod, he spent the rest of the race trying to find a line aro und him . Just when Larson got the d r ive to make a move, his Yamaha seized with the checkered-flag in sight. Blazek was the recipient of Larson's misfortune and inherited second place, followed by a tiring Gran t, who has been riddled from a skiing injury all year. Larson pushed across the line for fourth followed by Montesa rider Charlie Strayer. 0 Dina Daze Vintage M X McCleary, Washington Results : J une 3 OPEN ~ I. To m Rapp IBul): 2. Ron Melt on (BuI); 3.
