Lucchi did his best to stay close before
ad m itting hi s limitation s.

cou l d not go with him. I'm not a professiona l r acer and over the distance the
differen ce t old , M ax was ab le to ge t
away," Lucchi said . Wheth er a p rofessiona l o r n ot, L ucch i settled i n to third ,
an d w as nev er seriously attacked.
H ar ada was up o n Biaggi on th e
eigh th of 21 l ap s, jus t behi nd an d looking like h e w as w ai tin g for the en d of
t he ra ce to make his p u sh . Bu t he sai d
that he had to " ride very ha rd to catch
Bi ag gi and Lucchi and that m ean s tire
p rob lems later ." On the front straigh taway, Harada could stay i n th e draft of
the ApriIias if he w as right on them out
of the last comer, but if h e didn't get a
good drive he 'd l ose h alf a seco nd o n
t he stra i ght. H e turned in his fastest l aps
o n the 13th and 14th, then n early
crashed on the 15th in th e second of two
Bi ondetti chicanes. T hat gave Bi aggi th e
break he needed and he w ent to work .
The 15th was a n ew fast lap and he
lower ed it agai n on the 16th to open up
a o n e-seco n d gap that w ould grow at
the end .
" W he n I saw I ha d two seconds on
him, I knew i t w ould be enough," Biaggi
said .
R alf Waldm an n h ad se t tled i n to
fo u rth place o n the t h i r d la p , though
Okada was doing h i s b est to unsettle
him. The pair w ere insep arab le right to
the very en d, but W aldman n w as just
ab le to beat him on the race to th e line.
Behind them were fo u r ri ders all
vyi n g for fifth. Noboatsu A o k i was at
the front of the pa ck m ost of the time,
though Patrick van d er Goorbergh held
the sp o t i n termitten tly as th ey crossed
th e line .
The final lap w as the one that r eally
cou nted and Roberts Jr. did i t best, l ead ing home Aoki, va n d en Goorbergh and
Ruggia, who se b r ak es b egan to fail as
the rac e ebbed.
