Davidson was once again involved, with Price IV taking the win. DPC Racing's Tommy Colson and Topeka H -D's Philip Lash were a close second and third , re spectively. Doug Beattie took the last transfer. When Steve Fracci's light flashed green, it was the youngster Wait taking control from Price and his teammate Fletcher. Wa it was pulling away as Springsteen worked his way up fro m a fifth -place start. Springsteen finally got by the two Moroney's pilots at the race's midpoint. "I didn't get th at good a start, but I moved up to a h igh line where I didn't have to slow down s o much to get through the co rners," Springsteen said . "You really have to keep your momentum up w ith these things . I wasn't sure if I could catch him, because I was back as far as fifth, but I just kept p lugging away." Springsteen.closed in on Wait, and jus t as he did with Mik e Hacker at the Springfield Mile, the wily veteran pulled off a la s t-la p pass to steal the win from the you ng Ca lifornian. '1 didn't see him coming, then all of a sudden there he was," Wait said. "H e just drove right on around." La ter, Wait learned that a mechanical problem had also contributed to his demise. "The b rake locked up and a fter the race you couldn' t hard ly push the bike, but it was still a good run I almost had that win," said Wait with a w ell-e arned grin. GRAND NATIONAL Davis had first choice of the all-important s tarting p os ition s for the National and he picked a spot about a third of the way down from the top of the race track. Coolbeth Jr . went with the outside slot next to the wall. No one wanted to start between th em; Pa rker, Stanley, Carr and King lined up to Davis' left with an oddlooking gap between Davis and Coolbeth [r. Iwanaga, H ill, Varnes, Rogers, Poovey and O rr sat on r o w two . Mo rehead hugged the wall in row three with Price, Durelle and Jones filling out the field . Davis led into turn one, but Parker had the lead by the time they returned to the line to end lap one . Coo lbe th Jr. led a tight battIe for third over Sta nl ey, Varnes and Ca rr. Coolbe th Jr. appeared to falter on lap three a s Stanley got b y, but he quickly regrouped. However, it was short-lived. "I ha d a good drive off the line, then I just los t m y rhythm," said a disappointed Coolbe th Jr. '1 got a little tired and after [ res te d 'a few laps, I just couldn' t find a groove." Coolbeth would slip to an eventual 13th-place finish. Also headed on a downward slide was Stanley as he struggled to a 10th-place finish. U p front, Pa rker was riding a consistent low line. .{ "On ce I got around Will I dropped righ t to the bo ttom," Parker said. '1 d ecid ed h e was going to have to pass m e on th e ou tsid e if he was coming around, or if he stuffed m e we would just have to go from there." "I tri ed to change my lines, following Scotty, goi ng into one higher and squ aring it off," Davis said. 'The last cou ple of laps we got into lapped r id ers a n d I thought I m ig ht sneak by, but it rea lly messed both of us up." Carr cruised alone in third while Varnes and Morehead slowly closed until Morehead's luck once again soured when h:suffered a flat tire. ''' I can't believe it. We came so far, sta rting on the thir d row and a ll," Morehead said. 'W e must have ru n over something (Left) Parker (1) battled Kenny Coo lbeth Jr. (31) and Carr (4) off the start before taking command fo r good on the opening lap. (Below) The Grand National qu ickly bo iled down to a war between Parker (1) and Davis (21). on the track. The tube didn't roll and there was no thing wrong with the valve stem . We're running into bad luck and Scotty's winning races." Varnes and Ronnie Jones rounded out the top five. Rogers and King bounced to sixth and seventh with Morehead dropping to eighth on the last lap . Durelle and Stanley filled the top 10 With the confusion and controversy of lapped riders and the bl ue "move over" flag affecting th e rest of th e field, Charlie Orr was moved up to 11th in the finish ord er . "It was judged that Orr was the only rider that followed the correct procedure for lapped riders and it cost him several positions , so we moved h im back to where he belonged," said AMA Race Director Bruce Bober . l :ll laSalle Speedway laSalle, illinois Results: June 3, 1995 (Round 5 of 24): HEAT 1 (10 ri ders, 10 la ps, top 2 transfer); 1.
