OH,]UN. 4 fter finis hin g second in the last two races, Bartels' Harley-Davidson's National Champion Shawn Higbee final1y took his first win of th e seaso n after turnin g back arace-long cha rge by Spec tre-Mo ron ey' s Racing' s Aaron Yates la te in th e Progressive Insu rance Harley-Davidson SuperTwins race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. "It's great to be here. It's extra special for me wit h a lot of local peo ple watching. I bro ke the track record in qua lifying , but I knew it wo uld be a hard race," Higbe e said. "Aa ron's been th ere all week an d he's a hard-c ha rger. I wa tched w here he was getti ng me and it was the end of the back straight. I just concen tr a ted o n g oing in th ere deeper and deeper." Higbee led the firs t lap, then Yates w as b y and held th e po int until t he eigh th of 11 laps when Higb ee retook the lead. A clo se race qu ickly turned in to a rou t with Higbee pulling away in the final three laps to win by 5.149 seconds. H e comp leted the 11-1ap, 26.4-mile race in 18 minu tes, 46.959 seconds, at an average speed of 84.333 mph, Third place went to Woody Kyle Racing's David Estok, who lost touch wi th th e lead ers on th e second lap but was never cha llenged from beh ind . Fourth was d ecided on the final lap with Tilley's H-D 's Scott Zarnpach getting back around Mitchell's Mod esto HD's Matt Wait. That was also the battl e for the cha mpion ship points lead , w hich Zampach closed slig htly . After four of 10 races, Wait hold s a one-poin t edge on Zarnpa ch, 114-113. Higbee is third wi th 99, two be tter than Estok and Bartel s' H-D's Eric Bostrom, eigh th on the day. Lap one o f 11 en ded with a tri o of riders streaki ng across the line in close company; H igb ee fro nting Yates and Es tok . A lap later a nd Yates was in fron t, Higbee on his tail, with Estok losing gro und. The lead pair con tinued to pull away, Higbee d oggin g Yates and final1y getting him on the eighth lap . Yates wasn't able to keep u p and the wi n went to Higbee. . Estok's ride was solitary, never challengi ng or challenged, th ird place his all the way. Fourth was more of a d ogfight. Zampach had it to himself ve ry ea rly o n, leaving Wait and Eric Bostrom behind and seeming to edge away. Then , at the ha lfway mark, Wa it began to close up on his rea r fender on the eighth lap and passed him a lap later. Zampach wasn't givi ng up, though, and was able to take the spot back on the final lap. Wait was a close fifth, well in front of sixth. Renfrow cruised in with third, well clear of Graef, who in tum had a lead over fifth-pla ced Rogers. "It was very difficu lt condit ions today," Mori said. "But my Honda was very fast and my Bridgestone tires were very stable." "I got a great launch," Renfrow said. "But I knew we'd be in trouble with Mori. I justdidn't know how fast you cou ld go on full wets on a pretty dry race track. I just went faster and faster, but it wasn't fast enough. I ce rtainly could have gone faster - 1 just didn't.
